Description
May 8, 1962 o. E. GALLAND GARBAGE CAN Filed July 25, 1960 INVENTOR. OPAL E. GALLAND 3,033,414 GARBAGE CAN Opal E. Gallant], 711 S. Nacher Ave., Wapato, Wash. Filed July 25, 1960, Ser. No. 45,083 4 Claims. (Cl. 220-35) This invention relates to receptacles and more particularly to a garbage disposal receptacle.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a garbage can which cannot be readily tipped over, in which the lid is securely fastened to the receptacle portion thereof at all times, and which can be easily handled for emptying and carrying purposes.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a garbage can of the above type in which the lid is secured so as to prevent dogs and other animals from removing the contents therefrom, and which is constructed of a sturdy material so as to prevent damage thereto under all weather and operating conditions.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a garbage can bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevational view, with parts broken away, of a garbage can made in accordance with the present invention;
FIGURE 2 is a bottom plan View of the assembly shown in FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 3 is a front elevational view taken along line 33 of FIGURE 1.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, a garbage can made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a substantially hollow cylindrical receptacle 12 having a curved lid 14 which is integrally secured to the receptacle 12 at all times by a pair of flexible cables 16 that are secured at one end by means of plugs 22 within the longitudinal bore 18 of side sleeve members 20. This cable 16 may be constructed of any desired elastic, flexible, or resilient material, so as to accommodate the movement of the lid 14 between the full line and broken line position shown in FIGURE 1.
A handle 24 is formed integrally with one lower edge of the receptacle 12 by a cutout 26. A pair of laterally outwardly extending handles 28 are also integrally formed upon the sides of the receptacle 12, and such handles 28 serve as guides through which the tie cables 16 extend.
It will now be recognized that in actual use, the lid 14 can be conveniently moved between the open and closed position shown in FIGURE 1 simply by exerting sufficient pressure thereon to overcome the resistance to movement of the cables 16. In the open position, the handle 24 and pair of handles 28 may be used to tip or discharge the contents from the receptacle. It will thus be appreciated that this is a very stable garbage ice receptacle in which the lid cannot become accidentally lost, stepped on, or the like. Also, the lid cannot be removed by dogs or cats, thus preventing scattering of the contents of the garbage can upon the ground.
This device may be conveniently constructed of any desired material and in any particular size, thus making it adaptable for varied uses in all types of home, domestic or commercial, and industrial installations.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A refuse container comprising a receptacle having an open top, a lid engaging said open top for closing the receptacle, elastic and flexible means secured to the receptacle and to said lid for yieldably retaining the lid detachably in engagement with the open top of the receptacle and for holding the lid in an open position yieldably against an exterior portion of the receptacle and beneath said open top, said elastic and flexible means comprising a pair of cables disposed externally of the receptacle, said cables being secured to diametrically opposite portions of the receptacle and diametrically opposite portions of the lid, and loop members fixed to and disposed externally of the receptacle and through which said cables loosely extend, said loop members being spaced relative to the cable ends anchored to the receptacle whereby the cables are maintained under tension in the open or the closed position of the lid.
2. A refuse container as in claim 1, said loop members forming carrying handles.
3. A refuse container as in claim 1, said receptacle having an undulating upper edge defining the open top thereof and including diametrically opposed concavely arced portions beneath which the cables are anchored to the receptacle, and said lid comprising a bowed disc having a concave underside conformably engaging said upper edge.
4. A refuse container as in claim 3, said lid being flexible to contormably fit the contour of the upper edge of the receptacle in a closed position of the lid and to conformably engage a side wall portion of the receptacle in an open position of the lid.
