Description

May 8, 1962 s. E. ROSENBERG REINFORCING PATCH FOR LATEX GARMENTS Filed Aug. 17, 1955 United States Patent Office Patented May 8, 1962 3,033,207 REINFORCING PATCH FOR LATEX GARMENTS Stig E. Rosenberg, 1332 S. Main St., Brockton, Mass.
- Filed Aug. 17, 1955, Ser. No. 529,050
1 Claim. (Cl. 128521) This application is a continuation-in-part of my application, Serial No. 262,013, filed December 17, 1951, pursuant to which Patent No. 2,726,396 was granted December 13, 1955. The invention relates to reinforcing patches adapted to be applied to latex garments in the course of the making of such garments by dipping a form a number of times into a bath of prepared latex and causing the successive films of latex picked up by the form to coagulate or act, one upon another, until the desired thickness of deposited latex is obtained. Articles such as girdles are made in this manner and since the latex fabric is ordinarily mechanically weak as compared with a textile fabric, such articles are often made with reinforcements at points where extra stresses are liable to occur as, for example, where garters are to be attached. It is an object of the present invention to provide reinforcing patches to be applied to the garment in the course of its formation on a form, the reinforcing patches being especially strong and easily applied. Reference is had to the following description of embodiments thereof, and to the drawing, of which:
FIGURE 1 is an elevational view of a girdle having reinforcing patches incorporated therein for the support of garters;
FIGURE 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of FIGURE 1, on a larger scale;
FIGURE 3 is a plan view of a reinforcing patch, a portion being broken away to show in section;
FIGURE 4 is a section on the line 44 of FIGURE 3;
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view of a stiffening element for a reinforcing patch; and
FIGURE 6 is a sectional view of a patch having there in the stiffening element shown in FIGURE 5.
A girdle 10 of deposited latex is shown in FIGURE 1, this girdle having slits 12 therethrough near the lower margin to receive garters 14 or the like. To prevent the garter from tearing the wall of the girdle when subjected to tension, it is customary to reinforce the area around each slit 12. Such reinforcement can be provided in a number of ways. According to the present invention, an improved patch 20 is provided for this purpose.
The reinforcing patch 20 is preferably oval in shape but is not limited to that shape. It is made chiefly of rubber and can readily be applied to a partially formed latex garment at any desired point. In making a garment of this type, a suitable form is dipped one or more times in a bath of prepared latex. The reinforcing patches are applied wherever desired, and the form is dipped to deposit one or more additional films of latex on the form until the desired wall thickness has been built up.
At the center of the patch is an elongated area 22 of relatively thin rubber surrounded by an oval ridge 24 of rubber. This area 22 is of sufiicient length to have a slot 26 therethrough long enough to receive the web of a garter.
Surrounding the ridge 24 is a margin 28 which tapers in thickness from a maximum at the ridge 24 to a thin edge 30 at the periphery of the patch. When a patch of this description is applied to a partly formed girdle and the form is again dipped, the girdle acquires an efltlcient streamlined reinforcement of pleasing contour.
To provide extra strength and/ or stiffness, a closed loop 32 of other material is embedded in the rubber ridge 24. This loop may be a stiff wire or strand of metal, synthetic resin, fibrous material or any other material having substantial mechanical strength. Instead of the wirelike element 32, a closed loop 34 may be cut from a sheet of strong synthetic resin material such as nylon, this being the generally used name for polyamide resins such as are described in US. Patent No. 2,071,253. The loop 34 is embedded in a ridge 36 which surrounds a central area 38 with a slot 40. The margin 42 around the ridge tapers in thickness to a thin edge 44 at the periphery of the patch.
When the patch has been applied to a partly made girdle and the form has then been dipped again, the latex enters the slot 26 or 40 and coalesces with the previous film of latex which underlies the patch. After the dipping operations have been completed and the girdle stripped from the form, slits or slots 12 are cut through the latex which entered the slots 26 or 40 to prepare for the insertion of a garter Web 14, leaving the patch completely enclosed by latex.
I claim:
A reinforcing patch of soft rubber for girdles of deposited latex, said patch having a relatively thin elongated central area with a slot therein to receive a garter strip, an oval ridge surrounding said central area, and a margin tapering in thickness from said ridge to a thin edge at the periphery of the patch, said patch having a stiffening element of rigid material embedded in said ridge and encircling at least one side and the ends of said central area.
