Description
Feb. 1, 1955 s. E. ROSENBERG DIPPED LATEX GI RDLE Filed Oct. 10, 1951 12 a) I faraway e5 United States Patent DIPPED LATEX GIRDLE Stig E. Rosenberg, Brockton, Mass.
Application October 10, 1951, Serial No. 250,626
3 Claims. (Cl. 2--33) This invention relates to improvements in dipped latex girdles such as are made by dipping a suitable form into a pool of prepared latex repeatedly until a coating of desired thickness has been deposited on the form. The coating is stripped from the form and cut to make the upper and lower openings of the girdle. According to the present invention an improved manner of cutting is employed which reduces the amount of waste material which must be discarded.
The invention further relates to dipped latex girdles having improved reinforcing patches on the lower portion thereof to support members, such as garter straps or a crotch piece, which are detachable so that the girdle can be worn with or without them. Such patches are preferably of thin sheet material which is relatively tough and are made with a central slot of substantial width cut therein. The patches are applied to the form after it has been dipped once or twice to pick up an initial coating of latex. After the patches are applied to the form, they are covered by subsequent dippings, the films of latex thus obtained coalescing with the initial film through the slots as well as around the patches. Thus each patch is completely encased by latex deposited on the form, and a slit is cut in the latex spanning the slot of each patch to receive a member, such as a garter strap, which is to be supported.
For a more complete understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following description thereof, and to the drawing, of which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a girdle following the invention;
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the same;
Figure 3 is a front elevation of a similar girdle with detachable garter straps thereon;
Figure 4 is an elevation of a form for use in making the girdle illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of an improved reinforcing patch;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary elevation of a wall of a girdle having a patch mounted therein; and
Figure 7 is a section on the line 7-7 of Figure 6.
The girdle illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 is made by repeatedly dipping a form 10 in prepared latex and allowing each film to dry after each dip until the desired thickness is obtained in the coating deposited on the form. The coating is then suitably treated as by vulcanizing and is stripped from the form. The upper and lower por tions of the stripped article are trimmed as indicated in Figures 1 and 2. The upper end is cut so that the front wall 12 has a top edge 14 which is slightly concave. The rear wall 16 has an upper edge 18 which is concave to a considerably greater degree as indicated in Figure 2. Since the unstressed shape of the girdle is similar to that of the form on which it was deposited, it will present an appearance as indicated in Figure 1 when lying on a supporting surface, the front and back walls being substantially parallel and connected by sharply curved side walls.
The lower portion of the front wall is cut so as to form two deep recesses 20 and 22 which extend upward from the bottom edge of the article. These recesses provide leg holes and define between them a central portion 24 which extends to but not beyond the lower edge of the rear wall 16. This central portion 24 serves as a crotch piece for the girdle. The lower edge of the wall is approximately straight but the portions on either side of 2,700,766 Patented Feb. 1, 1955 the crotch piece may slope slightly downward from the outer edge of the girdle toward the crotch piece.
Figure 3 shows a girdle which may be similar in shape to the girdle shown in Figure 1. This girdle however is provided with four reenforcing patches embedded in the front and rear walls of the girdle, each wall having two of these patches.
As shown in Figure 5, each patch is preferably of oval shape with a central slot 32 of substantial width. For
0 example, the patch 30 may be an inch and a quarter long and about three quarters of an inch wide, the width of the slot being a quarter inch or less. These figures are by way of illustration and may be varied.
When girdles are to be made with reinforcing patches, the form is given one or more initial dips to pick up a thin film of latex on the surface of the form. The dried film is sticky so that when patches 30 are pressed against it they readily adhere to it. The form is then additionally dipped a desired number of times, the added films overlying the patches and coalescing with the initially deposited film through the slots 32 as well as around the patches so that in the finished article the films which underlie and overlie the patches merge in the slots.
After the envelope of latex has been vulcanized and stripped from the form, a slit 33 is cut through the latex film in each slot 32 to receive a garter strap 34. Each slit is spaced from the edges of the slot so that the patch itself remains completely embedded and sealed in the latex wall of the garment, as indicated in Figure 7.
Each strap has a flat toggle 36 attached to an end thereof so that when the strap is drawn through the slit in one of the reenforcing patches, the toggle bears against the patch and supports the strap. The strap however is easily removable so that the girdle can be worn with or without the garter straps.
Similarly, patches may be employed to support a removable crotch piece as described in my copending application Serial No. 244,815, filed September 1, 1951.
The form 10 is preferably of metal, such as aluminum, having parallel side faces which are joined by rounded edge surfaces 40. Suitable supporting means 42 are provided for the suspension of the form during the dipping operations. The lower edge of the form may be slightly concave in shape as at 44 so as to conform approximately to the upper edge 14 of the girdle so that a minimum amount of material will have to be trimmed away in making the edge 14.
I claim:
1. A girdle of deposited latex having front and back walls which are substantially flat when unstressed, the lower portion of said front wall having two curved recesses defining a central crotch piece which extends to but not beyond the bottom edge of the rear wall and is integral therewith, said front and back walls having small reinforcing patches near their lower edges for the support of detachable members, each said patch being of thin tough sheet material with a central slot of substantial width, each said patch being completely enclosed by latex films on both faces of the patch, which films merge in said slot.
2. A girdle as in claim 1, and a garter strap removably attached to each said patch to be supported thereby.
3. A girdle as in claim 1, each said patch being of thin tough sheet material with a central slot of substantial width, each said patch being completely enclosed by latex films on both faces of the patch, which films merge in said slot.
