PAPER VESSEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 303,216, dated August 5, 1884.

To all whom.- it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM E. ORUME and J osnrrr W. Snnron, citizens of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Vessels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to that class of paper vessels used chiefly by retailers of ice-cream, oysters, and like substances of a semi-fluid character.
The novelty of our invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts,
all as will be herewith set forth and specifiof constructing and applying the same. Fig.
2 is a top plan view of the vessel with the lid closed.
The same letters of reference are usedto indicate identical parts in all the figures.
The body A of the vessel may be of the usual or any suitable construction, though we prefer that it should be constructed of Manila paper, and made seamless from a single blank. The lid D, made of straw-board or other suit-able material, and of the shape shown, has one of its ends bent up to form a vertical extension, E, by which it is attached to the end wall, B, at or near its top, by
means of a wire staple, a, eyelets, stitching,
glue, or in any other suitable manner. The extension E also serves to stiffen and strength-v en the end wall, B, while to stiffen the opposite endwall, O, we provide a rim or molding, F, made of wood, straw-board, metal, or other suitable material, which embraces and is clamped upon its upper ends, as shown. The lid, when closed, is secured in place by means of its tongue, G, which is inserted through the slot H cut in the end wall, 0, immediately beneath the molding F, which prevents that part of the end wall which is over the slot frombeing torn or broken down. If desired, the extension E of the lid may be bent downward instead of upward, as shown in the drawings, and attached to the end wall, B, in a like or any suitable manner.
By the above construction of the lid and the mode of attaching it to the vessel, and the employment of the rib or molding F, together with the fact that the lid is confined between the upwardly-extending side walls, J, the vessel is prevented from collapsing or coming together when carried by the bail I), and the greatest possible strength and rigid 'ity are imparted to it in all its parts where strain is likely to come.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claiml. The combination, with a paper vessel provided with a carrying-bail, of a cover 01' lid having one end bent to form a vertical extension for attaching it to the vessel and attached thereto, and provided at its opposite end with a tongue adapted to be inserted through a slot in the end wall to hold it in place when closed, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a paper vessel provided with a carryingbail, of astiffening rim or molding applied to one end, and a lid inserted in the mouth of said vessel, and having a vertical extension at one end for attach ing it to the vessel, and a retaining or look ing tongue at its opposite end next to the stiffening-rim, adapted to engage with a slot in the end wall,'whereby said rim and lid serve to stiffen and strengthen the vessel against collapsing, substantially as described.
3. The herein-described paper vessel consisting of the body provided with a carryingbail, the lid D, inserted into the month of said vessel, and attached to the end wall by the vertical extension E, and provided with a locking-tongue, G, at its opposite end, theslot -H in the end wall of the vessel for the insering constructed and applied substantially in 9 the manner and for the purpose specified.
