Description

'D. A. FORD April 17, 1962 GARMENT Filed June 22, 1959 I INVENTOR.
.DIANA A. Fono A T TORNE YS Patented Apr. 17, 1962 3,029,441 GARMENT Diana A. Ford, 10624 Upton Ave. 5., Minneapolis, Minn. Filed June 22, 1959, Sort. No. 821,761 1 Claim. (Cl. 2-80) My invention relates generally to garments and more particularly to garments for infants, invalids, and the like.
The primary obiect of my invention is the provision of a garment of the above type in which an infant or invalid may be dressed with an absolute minimum of movement of the body and limbs. To this end, I provide a garment which may be formed from a flat blank upon which the infant or invalid may be placed for subsequent forming of the sheet into a garment.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a garment of the type immediately above described which is quite conventional in appearance when placed upon the wearer.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a garment of the above type which is extremely inexpensive to produce, and is extremely easy to place upon and remove from the body of the wearer.
The above and still further objects of my invention will become apparent from the following detailed specification, appended claim and attached drawings.
Referring to the drawings wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views:
FIG. 1 is a view in top plan of my novel garment in a fiat unfolded position, and showing the position of a would-be wearer thereon;
FIG. 2 is a View corresponding to FIG. 1 but illustrating one step in the forming of the garment from a fiat blank;
FIG. 3 is a view corresponding to FIG. 2, but showing the garment fully formed on the wearer;
FIG. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary View in section taken substantially on the line 4-4 of FIG. 3; and
FIG. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary detail in top plan of a portion of my novel garment, some parts being broken away and some parts shown in section.
Referring with greater particularity to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates in its entirety the body of my novel garment, said body being generally rectangular in shape and formed from suitable sheet material. As shown in FIG. 1, the body 1 is adapted to lie flat upon a supporting surface when same is an unfolded state. The lower edge 2 of the body 1 is formed to provide a central downwardly opening notch 3 which defines matching downwardly diverging leg-forming portions 4, 5. The leg-forming portion 4 along the side of the notch 3 is provided with snap fastener elements 6 adapted to cooperate with snap fastener elements 7 on the lower end of side 8 to form a tubular leg; whereas the leg-forming portion 5 is provided with snap fastener elements 9 adapted to cooperate with snap fastener elements 10 on the lower end of side 11 for this purpose.
The upper edge of the body 1 defines an arcuate Waist band 12, one side of which is provided with suitable fastener means, preferably and as shown in the nature of buttons 13 adapted to be received in buttonholes i4 on the opposite side thereof. When the tions 4, 5 are in the garment-forming position of FIG. 3 with the fastener elements 6 in engagement with the cooperating fastener elements 7 and the fastener elements 9 in engagement with their cooperating fastener elements 10,'the opposite sides 8, 11 intersect at the apex of the crotch-forming notch 3, whereby to define an overlapped waist-forming portion 15 and an overlapping waist-forming portion 16. Preferably and as shown in FIG. 5, the waist band 12 at its center is gathered, as indicated by the numeral '17, and stitched with suitable elastic thread to'impart a degree of stretch thereto. Also preferably and as shown, the waist band 12 and the overlapping waist portion 16 cooperate to define an integral upwardly extended bib portion 18.
A pair of crossed shoulder straps 19, 20 are secured at one end to the waist band 12, one on each side of the gathered portion 17. The opposite ends of the straps 19, 20 are adapted to be detachably secured to the upper end of the bib 18 through the medium of buttons 21 on the straps 19, 20, and buttonholes 22 on the bib portion 18.
The ease of dressing and undressing an infant or invalid with my novel garment is thought to be clearly understandable from the drawings without further explanation. How ever, in concluding, I wish it to be specifically understood that my invention may be capable of modification without departure from the scope and spirit of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A garment for infants, invalids, and the like comprising a generally rectangular body formed from sheet material and adapted to lie fiat on a supporting surface when in an unfolded state, said body along its lower edge defining a central downwardly opening notch and laterally spaced downwardly diverging leg portions, cooperating fastener means along the opposite lower side edges of said body and along opposite sides of said notch, an upper edge portion of said body defining a waistband which starts at one edge of said body and extends for more than half the width thereof,.-opposite side edges of said body intersecting at the apex of said notch and forming an overlapped waist portion, a bib portion forming an upward extension of one of said waist portions and extending from said waistband to the opposite side of said body, and detachable shoulder strap means adapted to extend between said bib and said waistband.
