Filed July 1, 1960, Ser. No. 46,409 3 Claims. (Cl. 240-) The present invention relates to light fixtures generally and in particular to a decorative display light fixture for a window opening.
Commonly in use are colored and white lamp bulbs electrically connected together in the form of a string. During the holiday season, the lamp bulbs are frequently 'hung in a string about a Window opening in order to enhance the appearance of a house or other building when viewed from outside the house or building and also to provide a decorative illumination of the interior of the house or building adjacent the window opening. Heretofore, only makeshift means has been employed to secure the strings of lamp bulbs in position about the window opening. Frequently, window opening is damaged and the paint chipped or punctured by the means which is employed to secure the string of light bulbs in position.
An object of the present invention is to provide a decorative display light fixture which lends itself to insertion into and withdrawal from a window frame with ease and facility and one which requires no fastening means for retaining it within the window frame.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a decorative display light fixture for insertion into a window frame which may be manufactured in all sizes to accommodate window openings of all sizes, one which is demountable and may be stored in a relatively compact package when demounted, and one which is with ease and facility assembled for use.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a decorative display light fixture for mounting in a window frame which is sturdy in construction, one simple in structure, one which may be manufactured and assembled at reasonable cost, and one which is highly effective in action.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a elevational view of a window frame with the lighting fixture of the present invention installed therein, central portions of the frame and fixture being broken away;
FIGURE 2 is a view on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 2--2 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a view taken on the line 3-3 of FIGURE 2, a decorative type lamp bulb being shown supported upon the fixture; and
FIGURE 4 is an exploded isometric view of the components shown in FIGURE 3 with the lamp bulb removed.
Referring in detail to the drawings, in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, the reference numeral 10 designates generally a window frame having spaced side jambs 12 and 14, a sill 16 extending between and connecting the lower ends of the side jarnbs 12 and 14 together, and a header 18 extending across and connecting the upper ends of the side jambs 12 and 14 together.
The decorative display lighting fixture of the present invention is designated generally by the reference numeral 20 and it consists in a hollow upstanding upright 22 adapted for positioning inwardly of and adjacent each of the side jambs 12 and 14.
Surface-engaging means, embodying a resilient suction cup 24-, is carried by the upright 22 on each end the woodwork surrounding the Cal thereof for engaging the sill l6 and header 18, as shown in FIGURE 3.
Each of the uprights 22 comprises a resilient hollow tubular connector 34 which, FIGURE 3, is disposed adjacent to and in alignment with each of the suction cups 24 at the upper and lower ends of the upright 22. An upper dowel pin 28 has the upper end portion extending into and is frictionally held by the suction cup 24 at the upper end of the upright 22 and the adjacent connector. An upstanding sleeve is disposed below the connector 34 adjacent the suction cup 24 at the upper end of the upright 22 and has the upper end portion circumposed about and frictionally held on the lower end portion of the upper dowel pin 28.
A lower dowel pin 30 has the upper end portion extending loosely into the lower end portion of the sleeve 32, the lower end portion of the dowel pin 30 extending into and being frictionally held by thesuction cup 24 at the lower end of the upright 22 and the adjacent connector 34-. Spring means in the form of a coil spring 26 is disposed within the sleeve 32 and has its ends bearing against the lower and upper ends of the upper and lower dowel pins 28 and 30, the spring means serv ing to accommodate the suction cup 24 at the lower end of the upright 22 and the adjacent connector 34 sill 16.
A socket element 36 is on each of the connectors 34 and projects perpendicularly from the mid-portion of each connector 34. The socket elements, FIGURE 1, of one of the uprights 22 face toward and are in alignment with the socket elements 36 of the other of the uprights 22.
A cross member 38 extends between and is supported in the adjacent branch portions 36 of the T connectors 34, the cross member being insertable into and withdrawable from the socket elements provided by such branch portions 36.
A plurality of decorative lamp bulbs 4% are arranged in spaced relation along and are supported upon each of the uprights 22 and each of the cross members 38.
Means, embodying a resilent clip 42, connects each of the bulbs 40 to the adjacent upright or cross member. The bulbs 40 are connected in a string by a pair of wires 44 over which the clips 42 are placed so as to grip the wires 44 and the adjacent part of the adjacent upright 22 or cross member 38, as shown most clearly in FIGURE 3.
In use, the cross members 38 are dimensioned so as to position the uprights 22 in spaced relation with respect to each of the window frame side jambs 12 and 14. The dowel pins 28 and 30 are cut to a length so as to support, with the assistance of the compressive strength of the coil spring 26 in each upright 22, the upright 22 between the sill 16 and header 18 with enough resistance to movement that the fixture 29 will not be in advertently dislodged.
The fixture 2% may be installed prior to positioning the bulbs 40 and attaching the wires 44 by the clips 42 or the whole fixture 20 with the bulbs 40 may be assembled away from the window frame 10 and installed in assembled condition in the window frame 10 by slipping one end or the other end of either of the uprights 22 into the window frame, swinging the fixture 20 so that the remaining upright 22 is within the frame, compressing the springs 26 and swinging the remaining ends of the uprights 22 into the frame.
What is claimed is:
l. The combination with a window frame including spaced side jambs, a sill connecting the lower ends of said side jambs together, and a header extending across and connecting the upper ends of said side jambs together, of a decorative display lighting fixture comprising a hollow upstanding upright positioned inwardly of and adjacent each of said side jambs, surface engaging means embodying a suction cup at the upper and lower ends of said uprights for engaging said header and sill for supporting said uprights in spaced relation with respect to each of said side jambs, each of said uprights comprising a resilient hollow tubular connector disposed adjacent to and in alignment with each of the suction cups at the upper and lower ends of said uprights, an upper dowel pin having the upper end portion extending into and frictionally held by the suction cup at the upper end of the upright and the adjacent connector, an upstanding sleeve disposed below the connector adjacent the suction cup at the upper end of the upright and having the upper end portion circumposed about and frictionally held on the lower end portion of said dowel pin, a lower dowel pin having the upper end portion extending loosely into the lower end portion of said sleeve and having the lower end portion extending into and frictionally held by the suction cup at the lower end of the upright and the adjacent connector, spring means in said sleeve and bearing against the lower and upper ends of said upper and lower dowel pins for accommodating the suction cup at the lower end of the upright and the adjacent connector to the sill, a socket element on each of said connectors, the socket elements of one of said uprights facing toward and in alignment with the socket elements of the other of said uprights, a cross member extending between and supported in adjacent socket elements of said uprights, said cross member being insertable into and withdrawable from said socket elements, and a plurality of decorative lamp bulbs arranged in spaced relation along and supported on each of said uprights and cross members.
2. The combination with a window frame including spaced side jambs, a sill connecting the lower ends of said side jambs together, and a header extending across and connecting the upper ends of said side jambs together, of a decorative display lighting fixture comprising a hollow upstanding upright positioned inwardly of and adjacent each of said side jambs, surface engaging means embodying a suction cup at the upper and lower ends of said uprights for engaging said header and sill for supporting said uprights in spaced relation with respect to each of said side jambs, each of said uprights comprising a resilient hollow tubular connector disposed adjacent to and in alignment with each of the suction cups at the upper and lower ends of said upright, an upper dowel pin having the upper end portion extending into and frictionally held by the suction cup at the upper end of the upright and the adjacent connector, an upstanding sleeve disposed below the connector adjacent the suction cup at the upper end of the upright and having the upper end portion circumposed about and frictionally held on the lower end portion of said dowel pin, a lower dowel pin having the upper end portion extending loosely into the lower end portion of said sleeve and having the lower end portion extending into and frictionally held by the suction cup at the lower end of the upright and the adjacent connector, spring means in said sleeve and bearing against the lower and upper ends of said upper and lower dowel pins for accommodating the suction cup at the lower end of the upright and the adjacent connector to said sill, a socket element on each of the connectors, the socket elements of one of said uprights facing toward and in alignment with the socket elements of the other of said uprights, a cross member extending between and supported in adjacent socket elements of said uprights, said cross member being insertable into and withdrawable from said socket elements, a plurality of decorative lamp bulbs arranged in spaced relation along each of said uprights and said cross members, and means connecting each of said bulbs to the adjacent upright or cross member.
3. The combination with a window frame including spaced side jambs, a sill connecting the lower ends of said side jambs together, and a header extending across-and connecting the upper ends of said side jambs together, of a decorative display lighting fixture comprising a hollow upstanding upright positioned inwardly of and adjacent each of said side jambs, surface engaging means embodying a suction cup at the upper and lower ends of said uprights for engaging said header and sill for supporting said uprights in spaced relation with respect to each of said side jambs, each of said uprights comprising a resilient hollow tubular connector disposed adjacent to and in alignment with each of the suction cups at the upper and lower ends of said uprights, an upper dowel pin having the upper end portion extending into and frictionaly held by the suction cup at the upper end of the upright and the adjacent connector, an upstanding sleeve disposed below the connector adjacent the suction cup at the upper end of the upright and having the upper end portion circumposed about and frictionally held on the lower end portion of said dowel pin, the lower dowel pin having the upper end portion extending loosely into the lower end portion of said sleeve and having the lower end portion extending into and frictionally held by the suction cup at the lower end of the upright and the adjacent connector, spring means in said sleeve and bearing against the lower and upper ends of said upper and lower dowel pins for accommodating the suction cup at the lower end of the upright and adjacent connector to said sill, a socket element in each of said connectors, the socket elements of one of said uprights facing toward and in alignment with the socket elements of the other of said uprights, a cross member extending between and supported in adjacent socket elements of said uprights, said cross member being insertable into and withdrawable from said socket elements, a plurality of decorative lamp bulbs arranged in spaced relation along each of said uprights and said cross members, and means embodying a resilient clip connecting each of said bulbs to the adjacent upright or cross member.
