No. 837,843 1 Claim. (Cl. 2--49) My present invention relates to a bib or similar protective garment to be worn by an individual while handling a baby.

The principal object of the present invention is to provide a garment which will protect one shoulder, an arm and the midriif of the individual.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a protective garment which utilizes a disposable tissue for increased santitation.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a protective garment in which the arm and midriff protecting portions can be made detachable from the main garment.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a protective garment which is simple in construction and easy and economical to manufacture and assemble.

With the above and other objects and advantageous features in view, my invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed description following in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and more particularly defined in the appended claim.

After feeding a small baby it is placed across the mothers shoulder and burped. This causes the baby to drool and the mothers dress gets wet and smelly. Heretofore, bibs have been constructed for protecting the mothers shoulder. However, it has been found that the mothers garment often becomes wet when feeding the baby and not only during burping. The present invention is designed to provide a combination garment which will protect all portions of the mothers dress with the additional feature of a disposable portion for cleanliness.

Referring to the drawings, the garment shown therein is illustrated in three separable parts. This is for purposes of illustration since the entire garment can be made in a single integral piece if desired. The main body of the garment is designed to protect one shoulder and comprises a generally rectangular portion 11 shown in FIG. 2, having a cut out 12 for the neck with the narrow strap 13 closed by a button or snap fastener so that the garment is positioned over the front, back and one shoulder. On the protected side, the garment is provided with tabs 14 which are fastened to each other as shown in FIG. 1 to hold the garment in position. This provides a main protective bib which can be used, in the illustrated form, independently of the rest of the garment for burping the baby only.

Where additional protection is desired the garment is provided with fastener elements 15 positioned around the armhole portion. A sleeve 16 is provided as shown in FIG. 2 with spaced fasteners 17 around the edge thereof which can be quickly placed over the arm of the wearer and snapped into tubular position and also attached to the fastener elements 15 of the garment. In addition a rectangular midriif protector is also provided with fastener elements 19 may be attached to the front lower portion of the garment. Thus a complete protection can be aiforded at all points which may be subject to wetting from either the baby or the bottle.

The bib portion 10 and the sleeve portion 16 and midrilf portion 18 may all be made of suitable washable material preferably waterproof. As stated hereinabove the assembly shown in FIG. 1 can be made in a single integral construction. The assembled garment readily forms a comfortable place for the baby to lay or rest his head. The main bib 10 may be provided with pockets or the rnidriif protector 18 may have the pockets. In the form shown in FIG. 1 the garment may be reversible.

In the form shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the garment shown in FIG. 1 is provided with an additional sanitary feature for providing a disposable element at the point of the most wetting which is across the shoulder when the baby is burped. In this form the bib 20 is similar to the bib 10 and may also be provided with the sleeve 21 and midriff portion 22. However, in addition the bib 20 is provided with a pair of spaced straps 23 attached to the chest portion and a pair of spaced straps 24 attached to the back portion as shown in FIG. 4. The end of each strap is provided with a large button 25 which is actually a snap fastener with the male portion attached to the body of the bib 20 beneath each button 25. Before putting the garment on a disposable tissue shown at 26 in dotted lines may be positioned so that its ends extend under the snap fastener buttons 25 to lock it in place. Now when the garment is put on as shown in FIG. 3 the tissue 26 will extend across the top of the shoulder to absorb any moisture from the baby. After use the tissue can be removed and thrown away and a fresh tissue used at the next burping.

I have thus provided a protective garment which pro vides complete protection for infant care including burping and feeding and protects all the effected surfaces, chest, shoulder, back, arm and midrilf. The garment may be made sectionally or in a single intergral construction. In addition it may be equipped with the disposable tissues for keeping it as clean as possible. Other advantages of the present invention will be readily apparent to a person skilled in the art.

I claim:

A protective garment comprising a generally rectangular bib portion having a neck opening adjacent one side, a fastening element for releasably closing the neck opening, a detachable sleeve portion extending from. the side of said bib portion opposite said neck opening, and a detachable rectangular midriif protecting portion extending from the lower front edge of said bib portion, and means for releasably retaining a disposable tissue across the shoulder area of said bib portion, said means comprising spaced snap fasteners on the front and rear portions of said bib portion.
