Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HOLMES, OF ST. CLAIR, PENNSYLVANIA.
PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,221, dated October 2, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HOLMES, of St. Clair, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following .is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, ,reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a. side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2, a plan, or top view of the same, the suction and forcepipes of the pump being removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a framing on which a rock shaft B, is fitted in suitable bearings, and C', is a frame attached to shaft B, the upper part of said frame having the power which operates the pump, applied to it through the medium of a rod D, or other device-the frame C, being oscillated or vibrated by the driving power which is applied to it.
E, is a cord or chain which is attached to the upper end of the frame C, and is connected at its lower end to a truck D, which is placed on ways a, a, which are inclined or they may be in a vertical position; they are shown inclined in Fig. l. To the lower end of truck D, there is attached a rod F, which is connected with the plunger rod F, of a force pump G, this pump is' secured to the lower end of the ways a, and is parallel with them as shown in Fig. l.
The suction pipe H of the pipe extends down of course into the water to be elevated,
and the force pipe I, extends up to the height the water is to be elevated. The truck D, is loaded with a weight which should be heavier than the weight of the column of water to be forced through pipe J. On the ways a a stops I), Z), are secured said stops limiting the downward movement of the truck.
The operation is as follows: The rod D, draws or pulls the frame C, in the direction indicated by the arrow and raises the truck D, and consequently draws up the plunger rod F, the pipe H, and pump cylinder filling with water as the frame, C, moves in the reverse direction, and then the truck D, descends by its own gravity forcing the water drawn up by the previous upward movement of the plunger rod, up through the pipe I. The frame C, may have a weight attached to it to counterpoise the truck D.
By employing the loaded truck D, as a means to force up lthe water there are no parts liable to be broken as is the case where the ordinary rigid or positive connections are employed and the pump may be operated rapidly so as to work very efficiently.
I do not claim broadly the idea of counter'- poising the pistons of pumps, but
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The arrangement of the loaded truck D, rod F, plunger rod F with the pump G, chain E, frame C, and rod D as and for the purposes herein set forth and described.
JOHN HOLMES.
