Description

C. SILVERS Feb. 20, 1962 PANEL GATE Filed Sept. 22, 1959 FIG 5 INVENTOR. CHARLES SILVERS ATTORNEY FIG.4
United States Patent 3,022,045 PANEL GATE Charles Silvers, 6500 N. Bay Road, Miami Beach, Fla. Filed Sept. 22, 1959, Ser. No. 841,558 4 Claims. (Cl. 256-73) This invention relates to gate structures and is more particularly directed to the use of extruded members formed into a panel for use as a gate.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a panel type gate which is light in weight, ofiers great resistance to twisting and bending and is extremely simple in construction.
Another object of the prment invention is to provide a gate constructed of elongated extruded members with cross bars having a double T-shaped cross section which otters great strength to the gate against twisting and bending.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a panel type gate constructed of extruded aluminum members and having a handle, a latch and hinges mounted thereon, thereby rendering it very easy to erect.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a panel type gate with extruded aluminum members with rounded edge portions so that a person or animal coming into contact with the gate cannot injure themselves.
With these and other objects in view, the invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevational view of a gate constructed in accordance with my invention.
FIGURE 2 is a rear elevational View.
FIGURE 3 is a vertical cross sectional view taken along the line 33 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 4 is a horizontal cross-sectional view taken along the line 44 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 5 is a cross-sectional view taken of the gate at the position of the hinge member.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals are used to designate similar parts throughout the several views, the numeral refers to a gate embodying my invention mounted to span an opening formed between posts 11 and 12.
The gate 10 consists of a plurality of horizontally disposed members H lying parallel to each other and substantially in a vertical plane. The horizontal members H are secured together to form a substantially rectangular structure by vertically disposed members V secured at the ends of the members H and at the midsection of the gate 10. Also, to further strengthen the gate 10 diagonally disposed cross braces C are secured to the horizontal members H.
All of the members H, C, and V are extruded aluminum members for their lightness as well as their strength. By extruding the members, the various parts are precision engineered with all edges being rounded to prevent injury to animals, etc. In addition, the particular cross sectional designs of the members H, C, and V provide great strength to the members.
The horizontal members H have a flat crown or web portion 15, joined along its edge portions by diagonally disposed leg portions 16, at the base of which extend flange members 17. The flange members 17, which receive rivets 18 for securing the various members together are provided with lip portions 19 that terminates at their upper portion in a rounded or beaded portion 20.
The vertical and cross members V and C respectively are of identical construction consisting of a substantially flat base member 21 at whose mid-portion a vertical member 21 extends at substantially right angle to form a T-shape. At the top portion of the vertical member 21 extends a second web member 23 an equal distance on each side of the vertical member 22 though less than that of the first web portion 21. Along each of the side edges of the web 23 there is a depending flange 24 at whose free edge there is a rounded or beaded portion 25. Likewise at the ends of the base member 21 there is an upwardly extending flange portion 26 whose upper ends terminate in a beaded portion. It is to be noted that all of the angular or bent portions at their outer surfaces are rounded to prevent any person or animal coming in contact therewith from being injured as can occur with sharp edges.
The gate 10 is provided with a pair of hinge members 30 each mounted at the top and bottom structural member H and extending beyond the vertical member V. The hinge members 30 are fitted beneath the arch formed by the web portion 15 of the member H andthe web portion.
1 of the member V with rivets 31 extending therethrough. for securing the hinge 30 to the gate 10. The hinge. members 39 are provided with a bore 32 for receiving pintle 33 secured to the post 11 to permit the swinging of the gate 10. On the other end of the gate 10, a latch 34 is secured to next to the top structural member H and the endmost vertical member V by a plurality of rivets in much the same manner as the hinge members 30. The latch 34 engages a catch 35 mounted on the post 12 and a handle 36 is secured to the vertical member V adjacent the latch 34 for releasing and seating the latch 34 on the catch 35 as desired.
