SHOE-FASTENING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 302,160, dated J'uly 15, 1884.

Be it known that I, JOHN C. RHoDEs,-a citizen of the United States, residing Vat Westborough, in the county of Atchison and State of Missouri, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Fastenings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon, which form 'a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in shoe-fastenings; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 isa side view bf a shoe provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side view of a shoe with the fasteningstrap removed. Fig.'3 shows one of the fastening-plates. Fig. 4 shows the hook-plate in detail. Fig. 5 is a plan view ofthe fastening. Fig. 6 shows a section of a shoe with the fastening-strap pushed down as when the shoe is unfastencd. y Fig. 7 isa detail view of the fastening-strap with the plates in position, and

The shoe-upper A is provided with a slit or opening, A,.formed preferably in the side thereof, as shown. rIhis slit is made sufficiently long to easily permit the drawing on or off of the shoe when the fastening, presentlydescribed, is released. The hooks B are secured to the shoe on opposite sides of the opening A. The edgesof the adjacent hooks are arranged `close together, as shown.
