(Cl. 128-528) This invention relates to garments, such as panties, bathing suits, bloomers, shorts, pantie girdles, step-ins and the like.

It is desirable that garments to which this invention relates maintain a close and comfortable fit for all positions of the wearers body. As the wearer moves the garment is subjected to stresses which must be relieved by corresponding flexures in the material. For example, the stresses caused in the garment as the wearer sits down occur in the rear of the garment and around the waistline. It has been found that the stress in the rear of the garment mainly occurs between the base and a point two or three inches below the waistline and it is in this region that stretchability in the vertical direction must be provided. If this stretchability is not provided, the garment will either tear or slide vertically and chafe the skin. Stretchebility in the waistline must be provided to relieve the stress caused as the wearer sits down, as mentioned above, and to allow the wearer to pass the garment over the hipline as it is being put on.

The present invention provides a structure for a garment of the above type, which provides for accommodation of the altered dimension of the wearer in assuming different positions, and provides sufiicient stretchability in the waistline to enable the garment to be easily donned.

In accordance with the present invention, the garment is made of a waist-encircling panel and a lower rear panel joined together by a bow-shaped seam extending from one side of the garment across the upper rear to the other side. The waist-encircling panel has the material thereof so disposed as to be stretchable laterally while the rear portion has the material so disposed as to be stretchable vertically.

The single bow-shaped seam across the rear of the garment follows the natural outlines of the wearers body thereby providing a very neat lit and appearance to the garment. Since the waist-encircling panel is primarily stretchable laterally, sufiicient resiliency is present in the belt-line to allow the garment to be easily donned and to relieve the stresses caused in the belt-line as the wearer sits down. The vertical stretchability of the lower rear panel provides suflicient resiliency in this section to relieve the stresses caused here as the wearer sits down or bends over.

While it will be appreciated from the foregoing that the invention applies to garments made from the usual knitted fabrics made from nonstretchable yarns, such as cotton, rayon, acetate, nylon or mixtures thereof or wool, it will be understood that the desired result may be achieved equally well, whether the material is made either partly or wholly of yarns which are inherently stretchable in themselves, such as yarns having a rubber content or yarns of the type which are becoming known in the trade as crimped yarns and in this connection it will be appreciated that where I refer to a material being so disposed that it is stretchable in a particular direction, I do not intend to state that the material cannot be stretchable in the direction at right angles thereto but only to indicate that the material must be most easily stretchable in the direction referred to.

ited States Patent O 3,016,900 Patented Jan. 16, 1962 It will be obvious that garments made in accordance with the invention may be trimmed in conventional manner with elastic trimming around the legs and belt, rib band elastic lace, embroidery, and may contain lace inserts and panels of trim at the front, side or back; the advantages of the invention not being dependent upon the material of the two panels being absolutely uniform in texture or being formed entirely of one integral piece of material.

The embodiment of the invention illustrated, discloses a close fitting pantie-type garment. The blanks which are sewn together to form the assembled garment, are illustrated in FIGURE 1 and comprise a waist-encircling panel 11, a lower rear panel 12, a gusset portion 13 and an auxiliary front trimming panel 17. The waist-encircling panel 11 is cut parallel to the goods so that it is primarily stretchable horizontally. The lower rear panel 12 is cut across the goods so that it is primarily stretchable vertically.

FIGURE 2 shows the manner in which the panels are joined together to form the assembled garment. Panels 11 and 12 are joined by a bow-shaped seam 15 extending from one leg opening of the garment, across the upper rear and crossing the centre line at a point somewhat below the top of the garment to the other leg opening. FIGURE 4 shows the manner in which the two ends of the waist-encircling panel 11 are joined by a vertical seam 16 at the front of the garment. The seam 16 is preferably sewn closed on the right side of the garment in order to present the smooth surface of the right side of the seam to the skin. The auxiliary panel 17, which could be made of lace or embroidery, is sewn on the front of the garment to cover the exposed coarse side of seam 16 and to provide additional support in this area. A band 14 of elastic material is provided around the top of panel 11. The gusset panel 13 extends between the lower mid-portions of panels 11 and 12 and may be formed of double material for added strength.

In a preferred embodiment the bow-shaped seam 15 is substantially semicircular which achieves: a balanced degree of flexibility in both the vertical and horizontal directions at each point along the seam in accordance with the requirements of stretch at that particular point.

What I claim is:

1. A close fitting bifurcated pants garment adapted to extend from the waist to the crotch of the wearer and having leg openings, said garment comprising a top rear panel having a relatively narrow continuous central portion encircling at least a portion of the waist and a one piece lower rear panel, said top rear panel being primarily stretchable in a horizontal direction and substantially less stretchable vertically, said lower rear panel being stretchable primarily vertically but substantially less stretchable horizontally, said lower rear panel covering a substantially larger area of the rear of the garment than the relatively narrow portion of the top rear panel, said panels being joined by a bow-shaped seam extending from one leg opening across the top rear of the garment to the other leg opening whereby the vertical stretch of the lower rear panel is translated to a horizontal stretch of the top rear panel along a bias.
