Description

Jan. 2, 1962 w. .1. TYRSECK DISPENSING CARRIER Filed Feb. 19, 1958 a u I I I R I I I l- F 1G. I.
T ORN United States Patent Ofice 3,015,432 Patented Jan. 2, 1962 3,015,432 DISPENSING CARRIER Walter J. Tyrseck, Montvilie, Conn assignor to Robertson Paper Box Company Incorporated, Moutville, Conn., a corporation of Connecticut Filed Feb. 19, 1958, Ser. No. 716,179 1 Claim. (Cl. 229-52) This invention relates to dispensing carriers.
More particularly, the invention is concerned with folding paper boxes having provision for tearing open a part of the box so as to provide access to the contents, and with the provision of a carrier handle in a structure of this character.
The invention is useful typically in connection with containers or carriers of considerable size and bulk, such, for example, as containers used for disposable diapers or similar fairly bulky articles, and is concerned primarily with the provision of a suitable handle therefor in conjunction with an opening section.
In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a fiat view of a blank used for making the carrier of the invention;
FIG. 2 is an isometric of a set up carrier;
FIG. 3 is an isometric of the carrier showing the handle in erect position and the break away section being opened, as viewed from the back; and
FIG. 4 is a front view similar to FIG. 3.
The blank of FIG. 1 comprises a front, bottom, back and top panels 1, 3, 5 and 7, aligned with each other and joined together by hinge lines 2, 4 and 6 as shown. These panels carry end flaps 9, 11, 13 and 15, for forming end closures. A breakable section 17 is formed partly in the panel 1 and partly in a panel 19 joined thereto on hinge line 20, which hinge line passes also through the breakable panel 17, as indicated. The outer edge 22 of the breakable section 17 is cut, the side edges 24 are perforated for severing and the inner or lower edge 26 is creased or scored for folding in the usual manner. The outer edge of panel 19 carries a handle 21 having an opening 23 and joined to the edge of panel 19 along hinge line 28. The outer edge of panel 7 is cut back slightly (making the panel generally somewhat narrower than the bottom panel 3) beyond the edges of the end flaps 15. This edge is printed over the areas 29 so as to render it non-adhesive and has between these areas areas 30 which are partly cut through (about half way through the board) so as to tear loose as later described.
In assembling the carrier, panel 7 is folded over on hinge line 6, and panel 1 is then folded over on hinge line 2, bringing the edge of panel 17 against the edge of panel 7 (or rather bringing the edges of end flaps 9 against the edges of end flaps 15). The contacting surfaces of panels 19 and 17 will previously have been prepared with adhesive, as indicated at A and B, the strip A running along the panel 19 beyond the edge 22 of the break out panel 20 and 'the strip B running along panels 19 and 17 within the line of the edge 22. The adhesive A joins panel 19 to the top panel 7 while adhesive B joins the part of the break out panel 17 which is beyond the hinge line 20 to the unprinted areas 30 but not to the printed areas 29 previously mentioned.
What is claimed is:
A paper box carrier comprising a unitary blank including bottom, front, back and top panels, and end flaps forming end closures, the front panel having hingedly joined to it a glue flap panel terminating centrally of the top panel, lying flat against the same, and joined thereto along two lines of adhesive, one adjacent the edge of the top panel and the other adjacent the edge of the glue flap panel, and comprising further a handle integrally hinged to the edge of the glue flap panel and adapted to lie flat against the top panel or be turned upward into perpendicular relation thereto for carrying purposes, the said front panel and glue flap being'cut and scored to form a removable section for providing access to the contents, the said removable section including the major part of the length of the adhesively joined portion of the glue panel which is adjacent the edge of the top panel but not the ends thereof, so that the said ends form permanent connections between the front panel and the glue flap panel beyond the said removable section, the top panel being printed to prevent effective adhesion along the major part of the said adhesively joined area and having partially cut out unprinted are-as holding down the upper edge of the said removable section while permitting detachment thereof, the adhesive joining of the said glue panel adjacent its edge and beyond the outline of the said removable section securing the handle to the carrier for supporting the same without placing substantial strain on the glue flap panel and front panel areas at the ends of the said removable section, and the edge of the top panel being spaced slightly from the hingeline between front panel and glue flap panel, whereby opening of the removable section does not aifect the carrying of the box by the handle.
