ORANGE .PAPER COMPANY, OF CASTLETON N HUDSON, NEW'YORK,
TION OF yNEW YORK METZGER, OF CASTLETON ON HUDSON, 'NEW YORK, ASSIG'NOR TO FORT A CORPORA- cAnroN Application mea February 27, 192s. serial No. sainz?.
My invention\relates to cartons for finely divided material, such as spices, soap and cleaning powders, powdered sugar, and other similar substances. M y invention has for its object the .construction of a carton which will remain tightly sealed until opened and after it is opened will be in convenient form for use. To this end my invention 1s applied to the sealed end type of carton, so
1o constructed that the ordinary package filling and sealing operations as conducted in automatic filling machmes, or otherwise, are in no way restrlcted or dlsturbed. In practlce \this desirable `result is achieved by forming in the end' flap or tab, which occupies the My A invention also spective view of the carton showing a iap uppermost position when the flaps are folded down and sealed, a partially cut out closure iap, which either can`be openedout to pivot 'or swing about onefedge, or else may be wholremoved, and when opened or removed, at the same time will open intended portions of the inner flap member so as toL provide restricted or shaker openings, such as circular perforations in the inner flap member. comprises various other features hereinafter 'described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a plan showing the filled and sealed carton embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a perin the uppermost tab member lifted and carrying with it portions of the inner tab member so as to form restricted openings or perforations therein; Fig. -3 is a plan 'with the uppermost` tab member removed and indieating the extent of the adhesive repellent surface on the inner tab member; Fig. 4 is a plan showing a modification of my invention in which the portion of the upper tab member is left attached along one edge thereof when the carton has been opened; and Fig. 5 is a perspective thereof showing the carton after This is a common form of construction. andthe invention herein is adapted to be applied to sealedend cartons without in any way interfering with the sealing operation or the sealed construction of the carton.
which access can be had tothe contents of fold tab members, the sidewall tab members 3 and 4.are provided with cut out or recessed portions 7 and 8, asis'shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The forward wall tab member 5 isthen sealedinto permanent engagement with the upper faces of the `folded in side wall tab members 3 and 4. The forward wall tab member 5 is provided near its center portion with an adhesive repellent surfacel or section 9, which may be ofvany desired shape but is shown in Figs. v2 and 3 of the drawings as forming a rectangle. The adhesive repellent surface 9, however, is interrupted in the untreated areas l1, which are preferably of circular shape and are bounded by a par- 55 In order to provlde an opening through tially cut line l2. The rear wall tab member -6has near its center a portion 13 which may be any desired-shape but is shown as a rectangle, bounded by the cut and scored line 14.
After the member 5 has been sealed down upon the members 3 and 4 the adhesive will be applied to the under surface of the rear wall tab member 6. The tab 6 is `then folded inward and sealed to the upper surface of the tab member 5. The sealingaction, however,
will not take place between the outermost tab member 6 andthe tab member 5 in the section 9 to which the repellent agent, such as varnish or printers ink,'has been applied. It will be seen, however, that the tab member 6 will adhere to the perforated areas 11 and is also sealed through its marginal portions to the tab member 5 beneath, so that the contents of the carton are eectually prevented from sifting or leaking throu h the closed end of the packet. When it is esired to use the contents of the carton, the area or section 13 is detached from the tab 6 along the scored and cut line 14 and is lifted or completely removed. As the perforated areas 11 are not covered with an adhesive repellent and have adhered to the section 13 of the tab 6, they, of course, will be readily pulled out of their attachment to the tab 5 and will be lifted or removed with the section 13. The contents'may then be shaken out of the apertures left by the removal of the areas 11.
If desired, the portion 13 of the tab member 6 may, as vis indicated in Fig. 4, be left attached along one edge to the member 6 and can thus be utilized as a closure.
The terms and expressions which I have employed are used as terms of description and not of limitation, and I have no intention, in the use of such terms and expressions, of exculding any equivalents of the features shown and described, or portions thereof, but recognize that various Imodifications are possible Within the scope of the invention claimed.
What I claim is:
1. In a carton having end closing tab members, the outermost tab member having a separable section thereof, said section being secured to severable portions in the portion ot a tab member beneath the said section, the separable section and the severable portions being removable fromtheir position in the tabs to permit the contents of the carton to be shaken out through the apertures thereby created.
2. In a carton having end closing tab members, a section in the outermost tab member and a plurality of areas in an inner tab member suitably secured together, the section and areas being separable from the tabs of which they for parts, the said tab's upon removal of said ction and areas having apertures out through which the contents of the carton may be shaken.
3. In a carton having end closing tab members, a section in the outermost tab member bounded by a severable line, the portion of an inner tab member lying immediately beneath the said section having severable parts attached to the said section and removable with it, whereby shaker apertures are formed in the carton end.
4. In a carton having end closing tab members, a removable section in the outermost tab member bounded b a severable line, a
adhere to the said section and be removed with it to form shaker openings in the end of the carton.
In testimony whereof, I have si ed my name to this specification this 23rdn day of February, 1928.
HENRY L. METZGER.
portion of the inner ta member lying immediately beneath the said section having an adhesive repellent surface to prevent the adhesion of the said section thereto, other portions of the said inner tab member having adhesive absorbing surfaces, whereby the other portions of the inner tab member will
