Description

INVENTOR ATTORNEY Filed March 25, 1957 f l 1 l l f 3,015,025 Patented Dec. 26, 1961 3,015,025 LAMP HEIGHT ADAPTOR Evan T. Williams, 755 Central Ave., Westfield, NJ. Filed Mar. 25, 1957, Ser. No. 648,314 6 Claims. (Cl. 24d- 144) This invention relates to lamp height adaptors, and more particularly to devices of this character for adjustably raising or lowering lamp bulbs or shades with respect to the lamp pedestal or base.
Lamp pedestals are manufactured in different heights, and it is necessary for the distributor to carry in stock such different heights for each design of pedestal, resulting in a large inventory. Furthermore, when a particular height is selected, it may be found to be too high or too low for a chair or table or other furniture with which it is to be grouped.
It is therefore the main object of the present invention to provide a height adaptor for a lamp pedestal to adjust the lamp bulb or shade to the desired height without changing the pedestal and without the use of special tools. l
Lamp pedestals are generally provided with a holder containing a lamp socket and having a flange for supporting a glass reflector surrounding the bulb. This reflector flange has become standardized, generally to a two and a quarter inch diameter. However, the reflector art is developing to a new and improved reflector having a lower rim requiring a larger diameter, about two and five eighths inches.
It is therefore another object of the present invention to pro-vide an adaptor to fit into the old standard smaller diameter flange and having a larger diameter reflector supporting flange to receive the new oversize reflector rims.
According to the present invention, the height extension adaptor comprises a shell having a lower smaller annular flange of greater diameter than the lamp bulb socket or switch and an upper annular flange adapted to receive the bottom of the glass shade rim at a greater height. The smaller annular flange preferably slidably receives an extension sleeve fitted over the lamp socket or switch. The extension sleeve is preferably slidably received in a spacer ring fitted inside the shade or reflector receiving flange of the pedestal holder. The eX- tension sleeve may be slotted for wires connected from the lamp switch to sockets on a ring slidably mounted on the extension sleeve. The top of the extension sleeve may telescopically receive a smaller tube for supporting a lamp shade at an adjustable height.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is an elevation of a lamp pedestal provided with a height adaptor according to the preferred embodiment of the present invention;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged vertical section through the adaptor shown in FIG. l; and
FIG. 3 is a similar section through a different assembly of parts shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, other parts being omitted.
The lamp base pedestal shown in the drawings comprises a base supporting a stern 1.2 on the upper end of which is mounted a holder 14. The holder 14 is an inverted bell shaped shell containing a lamp socket 15 and flaring upwardly and outwardly and terminating in an upper annular flange 16 adapted to receive the bottom rim of a standard gass reflector surrounding the lamp bulb 19. The flange 16 is provided with securing means such as set screws 2li for retaining the standard reflector in position.
As shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, the height adaptor comprises a shell 22 having a lower smaller annular flange 24 the inner surface of which is of greater diameter than the lamp socket 15, and an upper larger diameter flange 25 adapted to receive the larger diameter rim of the reflector 18, and provided with securing means such as set screws 26 for securing the reflector rim therein.
The height adaptor may also comprise a spacer ring 28 as shown in FIG. 2, which has an outer annular flange 29 the outer surface of which ilts inside the holder flange i6 and is secured in position by the set screws 20. The Spacer ring 28 has an inner flange 30, the inner surface of which slidably receives an extension sleeve or tube 32 such as a length of pipe of the same material and finish as the lamp pedestal. The sleeve 32 and the inner flange 3f) are both of larger diameter than the lamp socket 15 so as to llt down thereover inside of the holder lll, the bottom of the sleeve being slotted as at 33 to receive the socket switch button 34. The set screws 20 are preferably of sufllcient length to pass through both flanges 29 and 30 of the spacer ring, to engage the sleeve 32 and secure it in position.
To bring the lamp bulb 19 above the top of the sleeve 32, one or more socket extensions 35 are screwed into the socket 15 or preceding extensions. The adaptor shell 22 is mounted on the upper end of the sleeve 32, the smaller shell flange 24 slidabfy receiving the sleeve, and held at a selected adjusted height thereon by set screws 36.
When assembled as shown in FIG. 3, the adaptor shell is applied with its lower inner flange 24 inside the holder flange 16 and secured in position by set screws 20 engaging a groove 38 in the outer wall of the adaptor shell. For this small increase in height, the extension sleeve 32 is omitted, but a socket extension 35 is necessary to bring the lamp bulb 19 above the upper adaptor flange 25 which holds the reflector 18.
What is claimed is:
