Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED CARSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STENCI-I-TRAP FOR SINKS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,121, dated September 25, 1860.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED CARSON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Stench- Trap for Sinks, Bathing-Tubs, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan or top view of a sink, with my invention applied to it. Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts .in the two figures.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a sink or basin which may be of any proper form and dimensions. At the bottom of the sink or basin at about its center there is a small box or chamber B, which communicates with the sink or basin and has the eduction pipe C, passing up a proper distance within it as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
The top of the box or chamber B is about half covered by a plate a, the end of which over the center of the box or chamber extends down below the oriiice of pipe C, as shown at aX and forms a partition between two parts c, of the box or chamber B, the upper end of C, b-eing within the partv b, of the box or chamber. The plate a, may be cemented on the box or chamber and screwed down or otherwise secured in proper position said plate being secured flush with the bottom of sink A.
In the part c, of the box or chamber there is placed an inclined screen d, and over the part c, there is placed a lid e, (shown in red) the latter being in the same plane with plate a.
The operation is as follows when water is to be let out of the sink or basin the lid e, is raised and the box B fills with water and the latter passes down pipe C. The sink is thereby emptied but av portion of the box B remains supplied the level being in the same plane with the orifice of pipe C, as shown by the blue lines, and as the part ax of plate a extends down below the level of the orifice of pipe C, all communication between pipe C, and the sink or basin A, is cut off as will be fully understood by referring to liig. 2. The screen (Z, is designed to prevent large improper substances from passing into the eduction pipe.
From the above description it will be seen that all the parts are very accessible. In case the pipe C, becomes choked, the plate a may be readily removed and a rod forced down the pipe C, and the latter cleared of obstructions. All filth and dirt that may accumulate in the box or chamber B, it will be seen may be readily removed.
The box or chamber B of the sink or basin or other article, if the latter be of cast iron, may be cast with it, and if earthen ware be used, the box may be molded with the sink or main portion. The invention therefore can be applied at a very moderate expense and used in every case where the usual traps are applied.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The arrangement of the chamber B, plate a, partition ax, screen Z and pipe C, with the basin A in the manner and for the purposes herein shown and described.
ALFRED CARSON.
