Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE NAPOLEON HAYMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPaovED HYDRANT.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,812, dated September 8, 1863.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON HAYMAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hydrant; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to t-he accompanyin g dra wing, making a part of this specilication, said drawing being a vertical central section of my invention. l
The object of thi* invention is to obtain a hydrant which will admit of the waste water escaping from the service or discharge pipe in a more rapid manner than hitherto after the liow of water from said pipe is stopped, so as to prevent the possibility of the freezing up of the hydrant in severe weather in winter.
To this end the invention consists in the employment or useot' a slide provided with waterpassaa'es,and tted within a box with which'the service or discharge pipe, the supply-pipe, and waste-pipe communicate, all being arranged in .the manner hereinafter set forth.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it. Y
A represents a box ot' quadrilateral form, in which a slide, B, is iitted, and raised and lowered within the box by means of a screw-rod, O, or other suitable means.
D represents a service or discharge pipe, which communicates at its lower end with the box A, and extends upward to a proper height.
E representsthe supply-pipe, which com- 4 municates with the box A just below the service or discharge pipe and F represents a wastepipe which communicates with the box A at the side opposite to that where the sev-vice or discharge pipe D communicates with it. The slide B has an opening, a, made entirely through it in an oblique or inclined direc ion, and at such a point that when the slide is lowered within the box A to the extent et its movement the opening'a will be in line with the service or discharge pipe D and the wastepipe F. The slide B has also a recess, b, made in one side of it-the side which faces the pipes D E. The recess bis oblong, and of such a length that when the slide B is fully elevated its upper part will communicate with the lower end of the pipe D, and its lower part communicate with the supply-pipe E.
From the above description it will be seen that when the slide B is fully elevated the water will flow from the supply-pipe E into the recess b, and up through the service or discharge pipe D, as indicated by the bleek arrows. When the slide B is fully lowlietl, the recess b will pa ss below the supply-pipe E, and communication between the two pipes D E will be cut oft', while the opening ot, as previously described, will be brought in line with the lower end ot' the service-pipe D and the upper end ofthe waste-pipe F, and the water in pipe D will immediately pass through the opening a, and out through the waste-pipe F, as indicated by the redmarrows. The box A is sunk :into the groui'd a proper distance to communicate with the pipe E. The Waste Water passes directly into the ground, the earth being excavated and filled in with loose earth, so that the water may readily pass into it.
The arrangement is extremely simple and efficient, and admits of the waste water escaping rapidly from the service or discharge pipe, so as to prevent the water freezing within during the most severe cold weather.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The slide B, tted within the box A, and provided wilh the opening,` a and recess b, in combination with the service or discharge pipe D, supply-pipe E, and wastepipe F, arranged, respectively, in relation with the opening a and recess b, in the slide B, to operate as and for the purpose herein set forth.
NAPOLEON HAY MAN.
