SCREW AND TOGGLE-LEVER PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,038, dated June 24, 1884.-.

Be it known that I, VILLIAM II. WORTH, of Ietaluma, county of Sonoma, and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Screw and Toggle-Lever Presses; and Ihereby declare the following to beafull, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in cider, cheese, wine, or'other similar presses in which double toggle-levers Vare employed, with a right-and-lefthand screw shaft, by which they are operated; and it consists in a means for keeping the power and strain of the press in a right line, so as to avoid all cramping and warping of theparts.
Referring to the accompanying drawings I for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure l is a view of a press containing my improvements. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the two lower levers, showing the links by which a parallel motion is produced.

By the operation of this screw th'e ends of the toggle-levers, which are pivoted to the nuts II, are caused to approach to or recede from each other as the screw is rotated, and
thus raise or force the follower down, the upper beam A resisting the upward thrust of the levers.
The screw :may be operated by pawl-andratchet levers J upon opposite ends, and it may also have a light wheel, K, fixed to one end, so that it may be revolved more rapidly when it is desired to raise the follower up. In order to keep the power of the toggle-levers operating in a direct vertical line or at right angles with the horizontal screw, I employ links L, which unite the lower ends olf' the (No model.)

The projection N, at the lower end of the lever F, Fig. 2, is at a point a short distance inside of 53 an axis or line passing longitudinally through the pin-holes which are at each end of the lcver, so that a line drawn from the pivot G- through the pivot-hole of N would make an angle of from twenty to thirty degrees with a line forming the axis Abefore described. The lug M is perforated for a pin at the same distance from G with the pin-hole of N, and at right angles with it from the hole G. rihe links L are connected to the lug M of one le- 6 ver, and the opposite lug, N, of the other, the two links crossing each other, as shown in Fig. 2. It will be seen by this construction that the toggle-levers F F are so united that any motion imparted to the outer ends of' ei- 4ther would be communicated equally to the other lever, and that the movements of each would thus be made so nearly equal :as to impart a direct vertical movement to the follower D.
By having the pin-holes in the lugs N made inside of the line of the axis of the levers, as before described, I am enabled to equalize the movement of the lugs M and N, so thatwhether the levers be widely separated or moved up near together by the action of the screw, the
movement of the lugs M and N about the piv oted points G will be equal, and consequently there will be no strain upon the links L by reason of one set of lugs moving faster than the other at any point of their rotation about this pivotal point of the levers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a screw and toggle-lever press, means for producing an equal and parallel movement of the parts, consisting of lugs projecting inwardly from the outer ends of the levers and united by links, which cross cach other so as to connect the upper lug of one lever with the lower lug of the other, substantially as herein described.
