Description

G. W. CLARKE.
v PAPER-CUTTER. No. 173,587. V Patented Feb.15, 1876.
L I l v W'IfJV'ESSES INVENTOR nye, A T Q By Attorney N- PETERS, FNOTO'LITHOGRAPHER. WQSHINGTON, D. c.
UNITED STATES.
; PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. CLARKE, OF APPLETON, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-CUTTERS;
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,587, dated February 15, 1876; application filed I September 18, 1875.
ing drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a movable screw-shaft in a frame in connection with a moving knife and suitable levers, connected for operating said knife, as will be hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, A represents a metallic frame, either made square or having its upper side made curved, as is represented, or other suitable shape. In the two perpendicular end pieces of this frame are formed vertical slots, as represented, from a; to 00. B represents a shaft, which is provided on one side of its center with a right and on the other with a left screw-thread. This shaft lies in a horizontal position, with its two ends passing through the slots in the ends of the frame. Surroundin g this shaft are two nuts, D D, each of which. have ears on their upper and lower sides. 0 represents the knife, the ends of which slide in grooves in the ends of the frame. This knife is connected to the nuts D D by means of the bars E E. These bars are pivoted to the back of the knife and to the ears of the nuts D D on their under side. E E represent bars, which are pivoted to projections e e on the upper portion of the frame and to the ears on. the upper sides of the nuts D D.
By this arrangement two toggle-joints are formed for lifting and depressing the knife, the screwhaving a movable center longitudinally in its slots. F represents a regulatingwasher on'the outer end of the shaft B, which is confined to said shaft by means of a setscrew. vAt the other end of shaft B is a crank- Wheel, G, by means of which it is revolved or turned. By turning the wheel Gin one direction the knife is raised, and by turning it in the other it is depressed, so that it will cut with great power.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A paper-cutter having a vertically-acting knife, 0, in combination with and operated by the links E E, nuts D D, right and left screw B, the links E E, and the slotted frame A, having projections e 0, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of August, 1875.
