Description

Nov. 14, 1961 R. l. BEsHuR HAND WASHER Filed March A2, 1959 INV EN TOR. yfeS/zuv;
United States Patent O `3,008,317 HAND WASHER Ralph I. Beshur, 8720 S. Indiana Ave., Chicago, Ill. Filed Mar. 2, 1959, Ser. No. 796,380 3 Claims. (Cl. 68-213) This invention relates to washers and more particularly to a hand washer for washing small articles of clothing.
Hand washers have been used for washing small articles of clothing. This is done by placing the clothing, a quantity of water and soap in the washer, and agitating. However, it has always -been a problem to remove the washing water or cleaning solution from the washer without having the clothing slip out. Slipping out may cause the clothing, such as nylon stockings, to snag.v
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a hand washer which is designed to -allow for the draining of the cleaning liquid.
It is another object of this invention to provide a washer which comprises an open mouthed container, a cover for the mouth and means for attaching the cover to the container to seal the opening and for attaching the cover to the container for draining the cleaning liquid.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following description taken together with the accompanying drawings.
Of the drawings:
FlGURE l is a perspective view of the washer of this invention;
FIGURE 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially along the line 2--2 of FIGURE l;
FIGURE 3 is a bottom plan view of the lwasher of this invention;
F-lGURE 4 is an inverted vertical sectional view similar to FIGURE 2. partially broken with the cover in its inverted position; and
FIGURE 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken along the line -5-5 of FIGURE 4.
The washer of this invention includes a container 11 and a cover 12. The container and cover may be made of a plastic material or may -be constructed of lightweight metal such as aluminum.
The container 11 has a plurality of tins 13 which extend inwardly toward the center of the container. These fins tend to agitate the water or other cleaning liquid during a washing operation.
The bottom portion 14 of the container is smaller than the main portion of the container. Thus it is of a size which is easily held in the users hand, and in eiect provides a hand grip for the washer.
Surrounding the open top of the container 10 is a threaded portion 15. Surrounding the inner portion of the cover 12 is another threaded portion 16. The portion v16 is designed to mate with the portion 15 on the container and to thereby substantially seal the opening in the container during use as a washer.
Positioned on the top of the cover 12 are a plurality of radially extending bosses 17. The outer vertical edges 18 of the bosses 17 `are curved segments of a circle having a radius similar to the circular mouth of the container 11. A step-like stop 19 is provided adjacent each of the vertical surfaces 18. This stop is arranged to abut the lip 20 which defines the mouth of the container 11 when the cover is in an inverted position. In such a position, the vertical surfaces 18 will abut the inner walls 11a of the container thereby providing a frictional grip or attachment. A drain opening 21 is defined by the stops 19 and the spacing between the bosses 17. This opening 21 allows the washing water or cleaning liquid to be drained from the washer after the was-hing operation is completed.
ln using the washer of this invention, a group of small -Pa-ten=ted :Nov. 14, 1961 inside the container 11. A small quantity of soap andV water 'is added and the top 12 is tightly screwed in place. The washer is then gripped bythe bottom 14 and the top 12 and hand agitated to thoroughly clean the articles of clothing therein. A-fter a few minutes of agitation, the cover 12 is removed, inverted and reinserted into the mouth of the container 11 so that the surfaces 18 on the bosses 17 abut the container walls at 11a. The washer is then inverted and the cleaning fluid is drained from the interior through the openings 21. Rinsing operations may be performed in the same fashion until the soap or the like is satisfactorily removed from the clothing.
Ths washer of this invention has a number of desirable advantages. Thus it saves soap and water and the users time. It gets such things as nylon stockings cleaner and also prevents the tying up of the bathroom sink which is commonly used for washing such garments. Further, the Iwasher of this invention can be used to store soiled articles of clothing prior to washing. Moreover, this washer prevents snagging of such articles of clothing which are made of nylon.
Having thus described my invention as related to the embodiment shown in the accompanying drawings, it is my intention that the invention be not limited by any of the Vdetails of description unless otherwise specified, but rather be construed broadly within its spirit and scope as set out'in the accompanying claims.
l claim:
l. A washer, comprising: an open mouthed container, a substantially liquid tight cover for said open mouth, means on one side of said cover for attaching said cover to said container to substantially tightly seal said opening during washing, and means on the other side of said cover for attaching said cover to said container while providing a space between said cover and said container for draining the cleaning liquid, and means including a pluralityl of spaced surfaces arranged to be inserted into said container to frictionally gripsaid container, thereby providing substantially unsupported attachment of said cover to said container when said washer is in an inverted draining position.
2. A washer, comprising: an open mouthed container having la threaded portion about said mouth, a cover for said mouth having a threaded portion on one side thereof arranged to mate wit-h the mouth portion to attach said cover to said container to substantially tightly seal said opening during washing, vand a plurality of spaced bosses on the other side of said cover having surfaces arranged to abut interior portions of said container adjacent the lip of said mouth in a frictional grip to thereby attach the inverted cover to saidcontainer while providing a space between said cover and said container for draining the cleaning liquid therefrom, said frictional grip providing substantially unsupported attachment of said cover to said container when said washer is in an inverted draining position.
3. A washer, comprising: an open mouthed container having a threaded portion about said mouth, a cover -for said mouth having a threaded portion on one side thereof arranged to mate with the mouth portion to `attach said cover to said container to substantially tightly seal said opening during washing, and a plurality of radially extending bosses on the other side of said cover, the outer surfaces of each of said bosses having two parts, the first` of said parts being arranged to be inserted into said container tokabut interior portions of said container adjacent the lip of said mouth in a frictional grip, the second of said parts being kadapted to abut said lip to vspace said cover from said container thereby leaving a drain opening, said frictional grip being suiiicient to attach the inverted VV151,058' schamm' May1'9,1814
