HAIR TRIMMER ATTACHMENT FOR ELECTRIC RAzoRs Filed April 30. 1957 Nov. 14, 1961 J. E. WAGGONER 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 ,W o W Nov. 14, 1961 J. E. WAGGONER HAIR TRIMMER ATTACHMENT FOR ELECTRIC RAZORS Filed April 30, 1957 2 Sheets-;She et 2 United rates Fatent E if 3,698,233 HAIR TRIP/ MEIR ATTAUHMENT FOR ELECTRIC RAZORS Jacob E. Waggoner, 601 th Ave., Charles City, Iowa Filed Apr. 30, 1957, Ser. No. 656,115 6 Claims. (Cl. 30-90) The invention relates to the art of hm'r trimming and has reference more particularly to an attachment for electric razors for rendering the razors usable by the individual for trimming his hair around the temples and on the back of his neck.
A general object of the invention is to provide an attachment for a dry shaver on the order of a clipper attachment for cutting hair which would not otherwise enter the relatively narrow interior slots of the regular shaving heads and which would therefore be missed by the shaver. Although not of interest here, it can be noted that electric razors include an outer stationary element and an inner reciprocating cutting element. The stationary element is slotted transversely for receiving the hairs to be cut and accordingly the present attachment is provided with teeth similar to a comb for directing the long hairs into the narrow transverse slots of the razor whereby they are cut in the same manner as when the razor is used for shaving. The combination of a dry shaver and a hair trimming attachment for the same considerably adds to the utility of the razor and since the attachment can be readily applied to the shaving head and just as easily removed therefrom, the mechanics of switching from one operation to the other is materially simplified.
A further object is to provide an attachment for trimming hair as herein described and which will vary in thickness transversely of the attachment from one longitudinal edge to the other so that the effective cutting action on the long hairs can be varied whereby the operator can use the device in a manner to taper the cut at the temples and also'down the back of the neck if desired.
Another object is to provide a hair trimming attachment which will include transverse teeth having terminating protuberances at respective sides for initially parting the long hairs to be cut and \for directing them into the slots between the teeth which in turn will cause some of the hairs to enter the slots in the stationary cutting element and align with the shearing members of the razor.
A still further object is to provide a hair trimmer attachment for electric razors which will be relatively simple in construction, economical to manufacture, but which will be highly effective and satisfactory in use.
With these and other objects in view, the invention may consist of certain novel features of construction and operation, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the specification, drawings and claims appended hereto.

FIGURE 12 is a side elevational view with parts shown in section; and
FIGURE 13 is a transverse sectional view taken along line 13-13 of FIGURE 12.
The trimming attachment as best shown in FIGURES 2, 3 and 4, essentially consists of a member 10 formed of any suitable material and having spaced longitudinally extending portions or ribs 11 and 12 and teeth 14. The teeth 14 are connected by the longitudinal portions and said portions having a shape to provide for either a snap-on fit of the attachment to the shaving head of the razor or a slide-on fit, both of which will be described in particular detail as the description proceeds.
The electric razor which has been selected for receiving the present attachment is sold under the trademark Schick, and is manufactured by Schick Incorporated of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The body portion 15 of the razor contains the electric power means and mechanism for reciprocating the cutting members 16 and which provide thecutting elements 18, the said cutting elements cutting the'hair and the stubble inserted between the slots of the stationary member which constitutes the shaving head of the razor. Accordingly, the shaving head includes spaced portions 2% and 22 of arcuate form and whereineach has associated therewith a cutting member 16 as described. For containing the cutting member the side walls of each portion are indented as at 23 and 24 and as a result of this construction, the arcuate portions provide overhanging edges 25 and 26 which extend longitudinally of the shaving head on respective sides of the same. The attachment 10 of FIGURES 2, 3 and 4 is internally shaped to fit the shaving head of the razor and'since this attachment is adapted to be snapped onto the shaving head the longitudinal portion 12 is formed with an inwardly directed shoulder 28 which is located below the overhanging edge 26. The opposite internal edge of the attachment 10 is recessed at 39 and which is snapped over the overhanging edge 25 to secure the attachment in place on the shaving head of the razor.
The attachment 10 of FIGURE 2 and the attachment 40 of FIGURE 5 differ only in the thickness of the teeth and the shape of the protuberances at respective edges. In FIGURE 2 the attachment is shown as relatively thick throughout with its greatest thickness over the portion 22 and this area of greatest thickness terminates in a blunt nose or protuberance 41. The attachment tapers in a direction which may be termed rearwardly to the opposite side of minimum thickness and the edge thereof has a sharp protuberance identified by numeral 42. The attachment 40 is considerably thinner throughout its transverse width and the edge adjacent the portion 12 is formed with a sharp nose or protuberance 43. similar to the rear protuberance 42.
For trimming the hair around the temples either attachment 10 or 40 can be used in a manner as illustrated in FIGURE 1. The nose 41 or 43 is applied to the hair above the ear and due to the greater thickness of this edge of the attachments, the cutting of the hair is selective and the hairs that are cut will not be out very short. Accordingly, to taper the trimming of the hair at the temples the razor is oscillated or rotated in a downward direction to bring the entire width of the attachment progressively into contact with the temples and at the end of each stroke the edge of minimum thickness will be in contact with the hair adjacent the ear. Thus the hair is trimmed in a tapering fashion since more hairs will enter the shaving head at the thin edge of the attachment and they will be cut closer to the scalp of the individual. Also the degree of trimming can be varied of course by using either the thick attachment or. the thin attachment 49.
The attachment 50, as shown in FIGURE 6, is constructed so as to slide on the shaving head and thus the end retainers 19 of the razor, and which are pivoted to the body portion, must be moved down into an open position in order to provide clearance for sliding the attachment onto the shaving head. Also said attachment 50 is modified by the elimination of the recess 30 and by the provision of a shoulder 51 on the longitudinal portion 11 similar to the shoulder 23 on portion 12. 'Whereas, shoulattachment it is necessary to move an end retainer into its down position and slide the attachment'from ofi the shaving head.
Referring to FIGURE 7, the attachment 60 is similar in most respects to that of FIGURE 6 except that the teeth, instead of tapering in thickness from the forward blunt nose 41 to a rear sharp nose such as 42, are approximately the same thickness throughout their width. In addition both sides of the attachment 60 have rather blunt protuberances, with that on the right edge being identified by numeral 41 and that on the left edge by numeral 52. Since the teeth of attachment 5% taper-inthickness from nose 41 to nose 42, it will be understood that the device can be used for trimming in a manner as described and illustrated in FIGURE 1. Likewise, with respect to the attachment 6%, although trimming of the hair at the temples in a tapering fashion is not accomplished with the same degree of success and effectiveness as with the other attachments.
The attachment 70 shown in FIGURES 8 to 13 inclusive is characterized by depending pins 71 which are received in openings 72 in the post 73 of the razor for releasably affixing the attachment to the head of the razor. The post 73 is located between spaced portions and 22 of the shaving head and said post is part of the frame structure of the razor which as previously described includes the cutting members 16 providing the cutting elements 18. The basic elements of the attachment comprise the longitudinally extending ribs 74 and 75 having the transversely extending teeth 76 formed integrally therewith. Shoulders are eliminated from the ribs 74 and 75 in this modification since the depending pins 71 serve to releasably secure the attachment 70 to the shaving head.
As best shown in FIGURES 9 and 11 the pins 71 are integral with portions 77 provided on the underside of the teeth 76 and openings such as 72 are formed in the post 73 for receiving the pins. Each of the pins is preferably formed with a groove 80 and each opening has a detent 81 associated therewith for location in the groove to hold the pins and thus releasably retain the attachment in place on the shaving head. A coil spring 32 engages'the detent and both elements are held in proper relation by the set screw 83. Accordingly the attachment 70 can be quickly 7 and easily aflixed to the razor and the same is securely be removed and another one substituted therefor. In any event, in using such an attachment such as 70, whether releasable from the shaving head or fixed thereto, an advantage resides in the fact that the openings between the teeth 76 can be accurately aligned with the slots in the shaving head. e
The invention is not to be limited to or by details of construction of the particular embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawings, as various other forms of the device will of course be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
