United States This invention relates to metallic receptacles and more particularly to an improved closure for such receptacles.
It is the principal object of the present invent-ion to provide an improved metallic receptacle in which the joint between the closure and the receptacle provides a strong joint and at the same time also provides a hermetic seal.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a metallic receptacle in which the body of the receptacle and the closure can be of different materials or different gages of materials.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a metallic receptacle having an improved type of closure securing structure which can be easily applied with a minimum of effort.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a metallic receptacle having an improved joint construction between the body of the receptacle and the closure in which a sea-ling material can be inserted if desired.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide an improved joint for sealing a closure to a receptacle which has a wide variety of uses.
Other objects and advantageous features of the invention will be apparent from the description and claims.
The nature and characteristic features of the invention will be more readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part thereof, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a vertical central sectional view in perspective of a metallic receptacle in accordance with the invention, the section plane being located on the longitudinal axis of the receptacle;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the joint construction between the body of the receptacle and the closure; and
FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 2 showing the joint construction prior to sealing.
It should, of course, be understood that the description and drawings herein are illustrative merely, and that various modifications and changes can be made in the structure disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings in which a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated, the metallic receptacle 10 is, for the purposes of illustration, shown as a core box but the invention is not limited to such use.
The receptacle 10* includes an inner hollow cylindrical wall L1 and an outer hollow cylindrical wall 12 concentrio with the inner wall 11. In order to close the lower ends of the walls 11 and 12 the inner wall 11 is provided with a recess 14 and the outer wall 12 is also provided with a recess 15 within which a metallic disc 16 is inserted and secured in any desired manner.
The receptacle thus provided is suitable for the insertion of a desired object or article within the annular space 17 bounded by the inner and outer walls 11 and 12 and the disc 16 for retention in protected 'and/ or sealed condition.
The inner and outer walls 11 and 12, as shown in detail in FIG. 2, have internal faces 20 and external faces 21 and at the margins at which a closure is to be secured, shown as at the top, are preferably each initially provided with an annular recess bounded initially by a circular cylindrical surface 22, a lower shoulder 23 extending from atent Of 3,007,603 Patented Nov. 7, 1961 the surface 22 to the internal face 20 and by an upper shoulder 24. The lower shoulder 23 has a lateral dimension, is of the order of three fourths of the thickness of the wall 11 or 12 and the upper shoulder 24 has a lateral dimension of thickness of the order of one fourth of the thickness of the wall 11 or 12 in one preferred embodiment of the invention. The shoulder 23 and surface 22 can have an interposed fillet 25 and the surface 22 and shoulder 24 can have an interposed fillet 26.
v The uppershoulder 24 has a face 27 extending up wardly therefrom, connected by a fillet 28. The face 27 is initially coaxial and concentric to the internal faces 20 of the inner and outer walls 11 and 12.
An outer arcuate surface 29 can be provided connecting the external face 21 to the upper end of the face 27. The initial shape of this portion of the structure is illustrated in 'FIG. 3 and is shown in FIG. 2 in broken lines.
A closure 30 is provided preferably in the form of a disc and which may be of any suitable material. The material can be different from that of the body of the receptacle 10, can be of metal, Synthetic plastic impregnated fibre, or other suitable material, of harder material if desired than that of the body of the receptacle to provide greater strength, and thicker or thinner than the body of the receptacle 10 in accordance with the particular use to which the receptacle is to be put. The surface 27 provides clearance for insertion of the closure 30 supported on the shoulder 23.
The closure 30 has an inner face 31 and an outer face 6-2. The inner face 31 is initially freely supported upon the lower shoulder 24, and preferably has an upwardly extending circular cylindrical outer marginal surface 33 normal to the inner face 31. From the surface 33, with an interposed fillet 34, a downwardly and inwardly inclined annular or frusto conical surface 35 is provided from which an upwardly and outwardly inclined frusto conical surface 36 extends, a fillet 37 being interposed between the surface 35 and the surface 36. The angle in cross-section between the surface 35 and the surface 36 can be of the order of and the inclination of the surface 36 is preferably in the range from about 30 to 45 from the vertical longitudinal axis of the receptacle 10.
The marginal parts of the inner and outer walls 11 and 12 above the lower shoulder 23 are bendable or permanently deformable to meeting relation, as shown in FIG. 2, with corresponding surfaces 24 and 35 and corresponding surfaces 27 and 36 in engagement.
It will be noted that a space is provided, bounded by a portion of the surface of the shoulder 23, a portion of the surface 22 and a portion of the surface 33 and, if desired, a sealing material 38 can be inserted therein for providing a tighter seal after the surfaces have been moved to their locking position.
It will also be noted that the outer surface 32 of the closure 30 is substantially continuous with the surface 29 of the wall '12 so that a smooth exterior is provided, there being no ribs, rims, or depressions at the closure 30.
I claim:
1. A joint construction for a container and a container closure, said container having a deformable wall margin and said closure having inner and outer faces and a marginal edge therebetween, said wall margin having an annular interior recess with a lower bounding shoulder, an upper bounding shoulder, and an interior surface extending beyond said upper shoulder, said closure having a portion of its inner face in overlapping relation to and in engagement with said lower shoulder, said marginal edge of said closure having an inclined surface in engagement with the upper shoulder and an additional inclined surface in simultaneous engagement with said interior surface.
2. A joint construction as defined in claim 1 in which the angle between said inclined surfaces on said closure is of the order of 90.
3. A joint construction as defined in claim 1 in which said additional inclined surface is at an angle 'of the order of 30 to 45 with respect to the central longitudinal axis of the closure.
4. A joint construction as defined in claim 1 in which a space is provided between said marginal edge of said closure and a part of said recess.
5. A joint construction as defined in claim 1 in which a space is provided between said marginal edge of said closure and a part of said recess, and a packing is inserted in said space.
6. A joint construction for a container and a container closure, said container having a deformable wall margin and said closure having inner and outer faces and a marginal edge therebetween, said wall margin having an annular interior recess with a lower horizontal bounding shoulder, an upper inclined bounding shoulder, and an inclined interior surface extending beyond said upper shoulder to the terminus of the margin, said closure having a terminal portion of its inner face overlapping and in engagement with said lower shoulder, said marginal edge of said closure having an inclined surface in engagement with the upper shoulder, and an additional inclined surface in simultaneous engagement with said interior surface.
7. A joint construction as defined in claim 6 in which the exterior surface of said outer wall smoothly connects with the outer surface of said closure.
8. A joint construction for a container and a container closure, said container having a deformable wall margin and said closure having inner and outer faces and a marginal edge therebetween, said wall margin having an annular interior recess with a lower horizontal bounding shoulder, an upper bounding shoulder, and an interior surface extending beyond said upper shoulder, said closure having a terminal portion of its inner face overlapping and in engagement with said lower shoulder and a portion of its marginal edge in spaced relation to the surface of the recess, said marginal edge having an inclined surface in engagement by the upper shoulder and an additional inclined surface in simultaneous engagement with said interior surface.
