UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
-GEORGE V. NAUERTH, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE GLOBE FILES COMPANY,
OF SAME PLACE. I
CHECK AND BILL FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,724, dated June 17, 1884.
Application filed April :23, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, GEORGE V. N AUERTH, Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Checlnand Bill File, 'of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object a means or provision for the convenient filing and protection, with facilities for prompt reference, re-
moval, or substitution, of any check, bill, or other paper or any number of such papers. \Vith these objects in View, I provide a tray or drawer which, when not in use, preferably folds within a suitable case or cabinet. The inner side walls of this tray or of the compartments into which it may be divided'confine a series of shiftable and removable partitions -having end notches, which engage over rods v nipulation of the partitions, each one is beveled in one part on its rear and in another part on its front side, in the manner shown in the drawings and hereinafter-fully explained. A shiftable front or follower, readily self-locking in any position, and as easily advanced or re-, tracted when desired, enable the user to leave all the contents of the tray or of any compartment of the same in a compact condition, in
which the contents are held fiat and protected from dust, 85c. Openings in the front wall of the tray permit the insertionof the arm and hand of the user. \Eacli drawer is furnished with a combined pull and label-holder.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is Y a perspective view of a drawer or tray embodying my invention. Fig. 2is avertical section of the same from front to rear, the middle portion being broken away. Fig. 3 represents my combined label-holder, pull, and lockingspring for the follower. Fig. 4: is a vertical section of the inclosing case or cabinet, with a sideview of the tray in its folded condition, the extended condition of the tray being represented by broken lines. Fig. 5 is a section of the lower part of the cabinet. Fig. 6 represents a portion of the tray, showing two of the four gudgeons. Fig. 7 is a partly sectioned front view of a form of my tray without compartments.
A represents a tray or drawer, which may be divided into two or more lateral compartments, B B, by one or more fixed partitions, C. The front D of the tray has openings (1, one to each compartment. Each compartmenthas stretched from front to rear near the sides two rods, F, which occupy shallow notches g in follower or shift-able front G. Each compartment has also partitions H, more particularly described in the sequel.
The bottom I of the tray has at each compartment a central channel, t, that ex- I tends from front to rear, and is flanked by confining fianges K, on which the said follower G and partitions H slide. Each follower has attached to it a piece of metal, L, whose upper portion is formed into a pocket, M, for reception of a card or plate, N, having a suitable inscription to serve as a label. Below said pocket the piece of 7 metal is narrowed and curved outward to serve as a pull or handle, 0,,whence, extending downward, it takes the form of a spring, 1?, whose ends are engaged under the flanges K. Each shiftable partitionH has at or near its mid-length,on.its upper rear edge, a bevel or chamber, h, to enable its convenient manipulation, and to the left of such chamber, on its upper front edge, another bevel, h, to which is pasted or otherwise attached a tag, Q, with the name of the depositor (or customer, as the case may be)whose papers occupy the immediate'front of the parti* tion. The said tray may be slid as a drawer into a suitable rack, but is preferably provided with four gudgeons, of which two, R R, are shown, which enter two L-formed grooves, S, in a case or cabinet, T, (one pair of gudgeons to each groove,) so as to enable the tray to be readily folded into the said case, as represented by strong lines, or unfolded, as represented by dotted lines in Fig. 4.
In using the file, the tray Ais laid out horizontally, as shown in Fig. 1, or by dotted lines in Fig. 4, and the follower, which confines the check sought, being drawn back, operates to liberate the shiftable partitions behind it, and permits the user to insert his finger behind the partition inscribed with the name sought, so
as to incline that partition and all behind it backward and all front of it forward, as shown in Fig. 2, thus exposing the papers of this particular name to inspection and easy handling, and enabling insertion or abstraction of any number of papers. The notches g are just wide enough to permit the follower G and the shiftable partitions H to drop when liberated to the positions shown in Fig. 2. The pull 0 being 10- cated near the bottom of the follower G, the user is enabled to readily disengage the spring P sufficiently to'permit the follower to be shifted forward or backward, and when the user s hand is withdrawn the outthrust of the confined papers and partitions causes the follower to become self-locked by engagement of the spring the combined pull and spring-foot L, said foot engaging under guide-flanges K on the tray- ?oor, substantially as and for the purposes set orth.
2. In combination with the shiftable partitions H and the rods F, the follower G, having the combined label-holder, pull, and springfoot L, said foot engaging under guide-flanges K on the tray-floor, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination, with a series of shiftable partitions and follower, of the tray A, having one or more front openings, (1, as and for the purpose designated.
4. The combination of tray A, having the two pairs of gudgeons- R,with the case or cabinet T, having the L-formed grooves S, as and for the purposes explained.
set my hand.
