HENRY CLAYTON, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
PUMP-SPOUT.
ILPECIPICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 300,573, dated June 17, 1884.
Application filed March 4, 1854.
(N0 model.)
exact description of the invention which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in pump-spouts; and it consists of a detachable strainer secured to a band on the end of the spout.
The mechanism is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I is a1ongitudinal section of the pump-spout. Fig. II is an end view of the same. Fig. III is the retaining-ring.
Similar letters refer to similar parts through out the several views.
A is an ordinary form of wooden pumpspout, having a hole bored through the same for the passage of the water, and the left end is turned tapering, that it maybe driven snugly into the stock. The cast-iron band B is driven on the right end. This band has an inner flange with notches on opposite sides (see Fig. II) for the purpose of receiving the lugs of the thimble G. The end of the thimble is open,
having an inwai'dlyprojecting rim, to which is attached wire-gauze to serve as a strainer. The wire-gauze E is cut circular, larger than the interior of the thimble. The wire ring D is placed on the same, and is then driven to the rim of the thimble, where it is securely held.
The wire-gauze may be soldered to the rim of 40 the thimble, and the ring thereby dispensed with.
The operation is thus: Thelugs of the strainer-thimble enter the notches of the band, turning the thimble. The same is held within the rim of the band. The strainer prevents foreign substances flowing out with the water discharged by the pump, and to discharge such substances the strainer is removed.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
'1. The band B, with notched interior rim, straincr-thimble G, with lugs for engaging the same, in combination with a pump-spout, sub- A stantially as set forth.
2. In a strainer-thinible for a pump-spout, the combination of ring D, wire-gauze E, and thimble O, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY CLAYTON.
