SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,555, dated June 17, l884.
Application filed January 14, i884. (No model.)
'I0 ail whom, it may concern..-
Be it known that we, ELIAS B. BALDWIN and Errnnonn R. KLINE, both of Sayre, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a new and Improved Spark-Arrested of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved device for arresting the sparks and cinders .in locomotives and prevent their being ejected out of the smokestack.
The invention consists in the combination, with the snioliebox, of au outlet-pipe extending downward and backward, and of means for conveying,` the cinders into the upper end of the outlet-pipe.
The invention further consists in the conibination, with the above devices, of a winged wheel mounted on a shaft held in front ofthe outlet ends of the exhaust-pipes, whereby the said wheel can be operated by the exhaust'- steam.
{eference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part oi' this specification, in which similar letters oi' reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure lA is a front view of our improved sparl -a11ester. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the fan-wheel.
In the smoke box or compartment. A., at the front end of the boiler B, on which box the. sinolre-staclris fastened, two standards, G, are secured, in the upper ends of which a shaft, D, is journaled transversely across the front of the boiler. On the said shaft D a winged or bucket wheel, E, is mounted, which is placed in front of the horizontallybcnt upper ends of the steam-exhaust pipes II. On the shaft D a pulley, J, is mounted, over which a belt smaller pulley, L, on a shaft, M, journaled in the lower parts of the standards C and parallel with the shaft D. A fan-wheel, N, is mounted on the shalt ill, and in front of the fan-wheel N the upper end of a pipe, O, is located, which pipe extends out of the front of the compartment A, and is bent downward and backward between the wheels of the locomotive, as shown in Fig. 2. The lower end of the pipe O is closed by a gate or valve, I), which can he opened or closed from the locomotive-cab by means of a rod or rope, Q. The steam escaping; through the exhaust-pipes II revolves the wheel E and the shaft D, and from the shaft D the fan-wheel N is revolved and throws the cinders that accumulate on the bottom of the box or compartment A into the pipe O. At suitable intervals the valve or gate P is opened to let the cinders slide out of the bottom ofthe pipe O.
It desired, the shaft M can be revolved from one of the axles of the locomotive. n
If desired, conveyor-screws can be used in place of the fan-wheel to carry the cinders into the upper end of the pipe Q.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.(In aspark-arrester, the co1nbination,with the exhaust-pipes, of a. winged wheel in front ofthe upper ends of the exhaust-pipes, and a fan-wheel for throwing,` the cinders into an outlet-pipe operated by the said winged wheel, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a spark-arrester, the eo1nbination,with the smokebox A, of the pipe O, extending downward and backward from the bottom part of the smoke-box, and of means, substantially as described, i'or conveying` the cinders into the upper end of the pipe O, siiibstantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a sparlcarrester, the conibination, with the smoke-box A, of the pipe O, extending downward and outward `from the bottoni part ot'ithe said box, means, substantially as described, for conveying the ciuders into the upper end ol' the pipe O, and of the gate or valve I), for closingI the lower end of the pipe O,substantiall y as herein shown and described.
4C. In a spark-arrester, the combi nation, withy the standards C C in the smokebox, of the shaft D, journaled in the upper ends of the standards C', the winged wheel E, and the pulley J, mounted on the shaft D, the exhaustpipes II, the shaft M, the fairwheel N on the saine, the pulley Il, the belt K, and the outletpipe O, substantially as herein shown and described.
