HANDLE FOR CROSSCUT-SAWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,699, dated June 3,1884.
" Application filed March 21, me. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, ANDREW UREN, of Seattle, in the county of King and Territory of \Vashington, have invented a new and ImprovedHandle for Orosscut-Saws, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. v
My invention relatesto improvements in the handles of crosscut-saws; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l'is a side view of my improved saw-handle, showing it secured on the end of a crosscut-saw. Fig. 2 is plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line 00 00, Fig. 1.
A flat bar, A, is provided at one end with a tubular rectangular projection, 13, serving as a socket for receiving the lower part of an upright handle, '0. From the outer end of the bar A, and from the outer end surface of the tubular projection B, a U shaped bracket, D, projects, between the ends of which the end handle, E, is held. The vertical piece a of the bracket Dis provided with two lugs, F, on the outer edge, between which lugs the end of the saw-blade G passes, the end edge of the saw resting against the outer edge of the said vertical piece of the bracket. The lugs E prevent the handle-bracket from swing- A cut is made in the lower end of the handle 0, and the handle 0 is driven through the socket until the upper edge of the saw passes into the said out, thus preventing the handle 0 from swaying. A bolt, H, having a longitudinal slot, J, is passed through an aperture, L, in the bar A, and a winged nut,
I K, is screwed on the upper end of the bolt.
A rubber buffer or cushion, M, is held on the inner end of the bar A, which buffer or cushion strikes against the sides or ends'of the log while using the saw and prevents damage to the saw or'handle. The saw-blade is passed through the slot J, and the bolt is then drawn up tightly, so that the cross'piece formed on the lower end of the bolt H passes into a space between two teeth. The lower part of the handle is entirely clear from the teeth of the saw. Thelower part of the frame or bracket D holds the handle E, and serves as a guard to protect the hand from coming in contact with the end of the saw. The two handles 0 and E being held in one piece, are held more firmly than other double saw-handles.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the saw-blade G, of the fiat bar A, having a socket, B, and a U-shaped bracket, D, provided with a ban dle, E, and a vertical post, a, abutting against the end of the saw-blade, and having lugs F, straddling the end of the blade, and upright handle 0, slotted at its lower end to receive the upper edge of the saw-blade, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the saw-blade G and fiat bar A, having an aperture, L, socket B, and bracket D, provided with a handle, E, and lugs F, of the slotted rod H, nut K, and upright handle 0, slotted at its lower end, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a saw-handle, the combination, with the bar A, adapted to be held on the saw end,
the handle, substantially as herein shown and described.
