' BOX-NAILING MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,570, dated June 3, 1884. Application tiled June 26, 1882. (No model.) Patented in England January 28, 18822, No. 442, and in France April 18, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK MYERs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Box-N ailing Machines, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in the class of nailing-machines for use in the manufacture of wooden packing cases or boxes. The said invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of portions of a nailing-machine, showing the back plate of the same provided With means to facilitate the nailing of the boxsides upon what are termed made-up ends or cleats.

My improvement of this invention, which is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, relates to an improved device to be attached to the back plate of a nailing-machine when the same is to be used for nailing the sides of a box to what are termed made-up ends-that is to say, ends which consist of a' frame formed of narrow strips or cleats of wood upon which thin boards are nailed to fill up the space in the said frame, or cleats nailed to one or more pieces of boards to firmly hold them together.

This device consists of a bar or rest, m, which is secured directly to the back plate, of the machine by bolts and nuts m passing through vertical slots m in extensions on of the said bar or rest. Thisbar, when secured in position, projects from the said back plate, so that the cleat or projecting strip on the box-end may be readily placed and supported thereon, as shown in Fig. 2, during the nailing operation, and the crushing of the box-end by the descent of the nail-drivers and cross-head thus prevented. The aforesaid slots m in the extensions of the supporting-bar enable the same to be raised or lowered, to suit diHerent-sized ends when the machine is employed for making boxes or cases of various dimensions. WVhen solid ends are to be nailed to the sides, the said bar or rest is removed. In some cases the said bar or rest may be attached to the side frames of the machine, instead of to the back plate, and in either case may be made to yield by any suitable means, to allow for variations in the thickness of the parts to be nailed together.

WVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with the back plate, g, and table f of a nailing-machine, of the cleat-rest m, for the support of the narrow strips or cleats of made-up box-ends, said cleat-rest on being attached to said back plate, and also being adjustable thereon for adaptation to box-ends of various dimensions, substantiallyas described.
