UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY B. LARZELERE, OF GREEN CASTLE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE CRONVELL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
PORTABLE ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,484, dated May 27, 1884.
Application filed February 18, 1884. i (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY B. LARZELERE,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Greencastle, Franklin county, Pennsylva- 5 nia, have invented certain Improvements in Running-Gear for Portable Engines, of which the following is a specification. p
The object of my invention is to dispense with the usual continuous rear axle passing through or under the fire-box end of the boiler.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, Sheet 1, is a plan View of a portable engine with my improvements; Fig. 2, sheet 2,, an end View, partlyin section; and Fig. 3, aview 1 illustrating modifications.
A is the boiler; B, the cylinder of the engine, and D the engine-frame, the rear end of which is connected to or cast with the cylinderhead a, the front end of the frame having the saddle F and bearings b for the crank-shaft, said saddle F being rigidly bolted to the boiler.
The construction of the engine-mounting forms no part of my present invention, being described and claimed in an application filed by me on the 21st day of December, 1883, Serial N 0. 115,283.
My present improvement relates to the method of hanging the rear wheels of the truck to the firebox end of the boiler.
To avoid carrying the rear axle through the fire-box or bending it so as to pass under the same, I use two short axles, J, each pivoted at the inner end to a hanger, K, which is bolted to the side of the fire-box and is suitably stayed 5 by brace-rods p. To abox at the outer end of each hanger K is adapted a spring, s,which bears upon the top of the axle, and through the top of thebox passes a screw-bolt, t. This bolt, when the engine is being drawn about, 40 is elevated, so that it will not interfere with the vertical movement of the boiler under control of the springs s, a spring-support for the rear end of the boiler being thus provided; but when the engine has been drawn to its destination and put in operation, a rigid support for the boiler is necessary, and the bolt t is then screwed down, so as to bear upon the axle J and cause the latter to seat itselffirmly upon the bearing 10 of the hanger K, as in Fig. 2.
The shafts J may be furnished at the inner ends with boxes guided but free to slide vertically in the hangers K,instead of being pivoted to the latter; and other means than the screw-bolt t and bearing w may be employed 55 for locking the axles J in position, if desired. For instance, a transverse bolt passing through openings in the axle and hanger may be used, these modifications being illustrated in Fig. 3. The vertical bolt and pivoted axles are, however, preferred.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of theboiler, the hangers K thereon, the short axles, J, capable of yielding vertically independently of the hangers, the springs s, and bolts for locking the axles to the hangers, as set forth.
2. The combination of the boiler, the hangers K thereon, the short axles J, capable of yielding vertically independently of the hangers, the Springs 8, and screw-bolts 25, adapted to bear upon the axles, and the bearings w, forming seats for said axles, as set forth.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub- 75 scribing witnesses.
HENRY B. LARZELERE.
