RAILWAY SLEEPER AND CHAIR COMBINED. I
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 299,345, dated May 27, 1884.
Applic ti e March 2 88 (No model.) Patented in India December 8, 1883, N0. 203; in England January 18, 1884, No. 1,722:
in France February 1, 1884, and in Germany February '7. 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J o'snrrr CHATER, a citizen of Calcutta, residing at Seetarampore, in the District of Burdwan, Bengal, India, have invented an Improved Railway Sleeper and Chair Combined, (for which I have made application for patents in Great Britain, dated January 18,1884; France, dated February 1, 1884., and Germany, dated February 7, 1884, and by a specification filed in India under order dated December 8, 1883,N 0. 203,) of which the following is a specification.
My'invention relates to a combined sleeper and chair for the permanent way of railways, as I will describe, referring to the accompanying drawings.
Figures 1 and 2 are transverse sections through the rail, showing, respectively, asection and an elevation of the sleeper and chair. Fig. 3.is a plan of the sleeper and chair, and Fig. 1 is a plan of the under side of the sleeper. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the outside face, and Fig. 6 is an elevation of the inside face, of one of the jaws.
The sleeper S is cast preferably ribbed underneath, as indicated in Fig. 4, with recesses to receive two jaws, J and J, and a slot for the bar T. The two jaws are alike, so as to be interchangeable, and have in their outer faces recesses G G to receive cushions of caoutchouc or other elastic material, which it is of advantage to insert, particularly when there are sharp curves of the line.
There may also be an elastic cushion for the jaws to rest on in the recesses U U of the sleeper. The shape of the jaws is varied to suit the particular section of the rail B to which they are applied. Preferably they are so shaped as to suspend the rail by its head, as shown in Fig. 1. The outer jaw, J, is inserted into the recess of the sleeper, and secured by a wedge or filling piece, W. The inner jaw, J, is held by the tie-bar T, passed through it, and the whole is secured by the keys K and K, driven into the slots of the tie-bar. The jaws J J may have shoulders extending laterally over the ribs of the sleeper, as shown in Fig. 7.
Having thus described the nature of my invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I claim A combined railway sleeper and chair, consisting of a sleeper in recesses of which jaws holding the rail are fixed by a tie-bar passed JOSEPH GHATER.
