UNLTED sTATns PATENT OFFICE.
CARMI 0; BENTON, OF GRAINFIELD, KANSAS.
RAILROAD-TIEL- specification o; neteeraratent.'
Patented Jan.w19,-1909.. laos'.Y serial-Np. esmas'.
13e it known that I, CARMI BENTON, a c1t1z en oi the United States, residing at Gramfield,'in the county of Gove, State of Ka sas have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Railroadl'lies; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains tomake and use the Y has.' for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efi'iclency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to pro'- duce a railway tie in sections centrally united, `and with the sections movable to a "llmited extent laterally, to provide for the automat-ic adjustment of the ties at the curved ortions of the'road bed.
Anoter object of the invention is to produce -a tie comprising a central immovable member andend sections engaging the central member and movable laterally to a limited extent.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 4'is a transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
The improved device is formed in two rail supporting sections 10-11 engagin end to end, and with a tubular member or s eeve 12,
the latter 'securedby the bolts 13 or suitable fastening means to the""tie sections. The sections `10-11 do not fit the central section closely, atthe sides as shown in Fig. 4 so that a limited amount of movement is permitted laterally, whereby the rail supporting seetions are free to automatically adjust them-- selves under ,the strains imparted to the rails at curves and thus prevent the unequal binding of the members. The tiesection 10 being secured in the. casing 12 by a single bolt 13 and the tie section 11 being likewise secured in the casing by a single bolt 13, swing slightly laterally upon these bolts, as will be obvious. The lower face of the tubular member is formed with ribs 14 preferably crossing at right angles and spaced apart to Aplication led June 11,'
define -a lurality of pockets or cavities 15,--
into whif the tamping material enters'and thus firmly beds the-central member -in theroad bed, and efectuall-y' prevents the and transverselyof the road bed. The ribs also materially strengthen the tubular memer. r v The rails represented at 16 are supported u on the tie sections 10-`11, by clamp p ates 17 secured to the tie sections by bolts 18, or other suitable means. The outer clamp plates are relatively Wide, and bear against the outer surface of the rail, while the inner clamp plates are relatively narrow and bear against thev correspondingly narrow portion of the rail, so that as the tie sections play back and forth to the limited ex- Itent noted within the central tubular member, the relatively narrow inner clamp plates permit this slight lateral movement without producing cramping eifect between the rails f/ and tie sections.
1. A railway tie comprising a central tu-A bular member ada ted to be immovably embedded in the roa bed, and two tie sections engaging end to end wi 4Lhin said tubular member and movable laterally therein/to a limited extent.
2. A railway tie comprising a central -tubular member adapted to be immovably embedded in the road bed, two tie sectionsengaging end to end within said tubular member and movable laterally therein to a limited extent, and means for securing said tie sections from movement longitudinally of the tubular member.
3. A railway tie com rising a central tubular member having r1 s spaced apart' and crossing at right angles upon the lower face and ada ted to be immovably embedded in ber and movable laterally therein to a limited extent, and means for clamping the fails to said tie sections. 4
5. A railway tie comprising a central tubular nlen'lbeli1 adapted to be immovably embedded in the road bed, two tie sections engaging end to end within said tubular member and movable laterally therein' to a limited extent, means for securing said tie sections from movement longitudinally of the tubular member, and means for clamping the rails. to said tie sections.
6. A railway tie comprising a central tubular member adapted to be immovably embedded n the road bed, two tie sections engagng end to end within said tubular membei` and movable laterally therein to a lmit ed extent, 'elatvely wide rail braces secured to the tie sections and. adapted te bear against the outer faces of the fails, and Telatively narrow rail lnaces secured to the tie sections and adapted to bear-against themner faces of the rails.
ln testimony whereof, l ax my signature, in presence of. two witnesses.
