Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcEO MAXIMILIAN VVAPPIOH, OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 29,928, dated September 4, 1860.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAXIMILIAN WAP- rIcrI, of Sacramento, in the State of California, have invented and made certain new and useful Improvements in Presses for Cotton, Hay, or other Articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specication, wherein- Figure l is a side view of said press. Fig. 2 is a vertical section at the line x x, and Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
Similar letters of reference denote the same parts.
`The nature of my said invention consists of pawls acted on by a cross-shaft, and revolving inclines that give motion to the platen that compresses the goods, and the operation of the parts is resisted by yielding journal-boxes, so that the parts are more reliable, as they are not subjected to a sudden and unyielding strain.
I have represented my press as standing vertically, but the same may be placed horizontally or inverted, if desired; and the press is shown as single,l but it maybe made double, if desired. p
In the drawings, a is the lower platen, on which are the standards or side frames, b b, of any desired character. Between these frames is a wheel, c, whose circumferenceis not circular but iiuted, forming a series of inclined planes. This wheel c is on a shaft, d, that is set in journals l l in the side frames, b, and above each of these journals is a rubber or other suitable spring, 2, for a purpose hereinafter mentioned.
3 3 are boxes or journals carrying the crossbar or roller c, and 4 4L are springs to keep the roller e wheel c.
5 5 are journals or blocks around the axis of the roller e near the boxes 3 3, said blocks being within the ratchet-frames ff, that conneet at their lower ends to the follower or platen g. These frames f f may be guided in slides or by rollers on the side frames, b.
6 6 are pairs of pawls attached to the blocks 5 5, and kept to the teeth of the ratchetframes f j" by springs, and 7 7 are pairs of pawls (see dotted lines, Fig. 2) on a block around the shaft d, near each end thereof.
The operation is as follows: rIhe bale or bundle to be pressed is laid between the plat- V and parts attached up to the tinted en a and follower g, and the shaft d and fiuted wheel c revolved by competent power. The roller e is forced down by the inclined surface between each flute, carrying with it the pawls 6 6, frames ff, and follower g, and the pawls 7 7 retain the frames ff at the point to which they are forced down by each movement of the roller e until the necessary pressure is obtained upon the bale or bundle. In all cases thesprings 2 2, intervening between the journalbox of the shaft d and the side frames, b b, yield under the pressure and prevent any sudden strain on the parts as the inclined or fluted surface of c comes in contact with the roller e. After the bale is pressed, the pawls are to be re leased bythe cords or chains 8 S, so that the frame f will slide back out of the way; or, if desired, the platen g may be detained by a latch-lever while the pawls are being disconnected from the ratchet-framef; and when the press is vertical the follower g has to be drawn up out of the way for the next bale. To accomplish this, I provide the drums IL h, that are coupled to or disconnected from the wheel c by sliding them endwise on the shaft cl. Vhen in contact with pins 9 9 in c, the drums 7L h are coupled thereto and rotate therewith, so as to hoist the platform or follower g by the chains or ropes 10 10 to said drums 7L h, the pawls 6 and 7 of course being kept from contact with the ratchet-frames f by the cords 8, or other suitable device. The drums h h and chains or ropes l() 10 will also act to draw the platen along when horizontal; or other devices may be used for moving this follower or platen g.
' It will be evident that the ratchet-frames j" f might be connected to intervening levers between their ends and the follower g, so as to make the power progressive.
My press may be applied for cotton, hay, tobacco, hops, oil, cider, or for any other articles to which it may be applicable.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The ratchet-frames ff and pawls 6 6, acted on by the roller e and luted wheel c, as and for the purposes specified. 1
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 2d day of August, 1860.
MAXIMILIAN VAPPIOII.
