WAGON TONGUE SUPPORT.
Patented May 2'7, 1884.

M0 w BY ATTORNEYS.
Ilnrr fiat-he WILLIAM PENN MARTIN,
Parka-r Crricn.
OF CHICO, CALIFORNIA.
WAGCN TONGUE SUPPOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,238, dated May 27, 1884.
' Application filed February 8, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM PENN MAR- TIN, of Chico, in the county of Butte and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Wagon-Tongue Supportenof which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of a wagon tongue or pole supporter for holding the weight of the tongue or pole, ncckyoke, and other attachments oil the necks of the horses, and being adapted to disconnect from the tongue or pole readily when it is desirable to let the tongue or pole down to the ground, and said supporter is contrived for being attached to wagon beds, racks, and boxes of different forms and sizes, all as hereinafter fully described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved wagon-tongue support applied to the bed-frame of a farm-wagon and connected with the tongue. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a part of a wagon-box, showing the application of the said tonguesupporting attachment to it; and Fig. 8 is a detail of the said attachment in side elevation.
The essential parts of my improved wagon tongue or pole supporting attachment consist of the brackets a, rod 22, sheave 0, chain d, hook e, and the ring f, said brackets being adapted to connect either with the sides 9 of a wagon-box or the uprights h, attached to a bed-frame, i, rack, or other similar part of a wagon, the rod 6 being fitted in the ends of the brackets a so as to be connected to them alike whether the bed or box to which the brackets are attached be wide or narrow, the sheave 0 being fitted on-the rod 1) to hold the chain, and so that the sheave may run along the rod, according as the tongue swings one way or the other, and the chain being connected to the yokej of the sheave, and also connected to the ring fto support the tongue m,
My invention also includes the uprights h, which are to be used in some cases, as when a bed, t, or other device is used on the wagon not high enough for connecting the brackets a, which must be located a sufiicient height above the tongue for enabling the chain to range sufficiently oblique to the tongue for supporting it properly. I employ a hook, e, to connect the chain at with. the ring f, at
| tached to the tongue, to enable the chain to be readily connected and disconnected when desired, as for convenience in leading one of the horses over the tongue for taking his place to be hitched up. The rod b is fitted to extend through the brackets more or less, and has the ends screw-threaded a suitable length for screwing home the retaining-nuts 76 when the narrowest boxes are used. The sheave 0 en ables the chain to run along the supportingrod 1) freely, so as to support the tongue about the same height, whether extending directly forward of the wagon or turned considerably to right or left.
The uprights h, for the support of the brackets a, consist of one vertical bar and one inclined bar, as shown, which, being bolted to the bed-frame timbers by, say, two bolts, Z, in the inclined bars and one in the vertical bars, are suitably stayed to effectually resist the stress of the weight of the tongue. The bolts Z are to be fitted detachably, so that the said upright supports may be readily removed from one bed and attached to another.
It will be seen that with this simple tongue or pole support the weight of the tongue may be wholly removed from the necks of the horses, greatly to their relief, especially when an evener and whifiietree are to be carried on the end of the tongue for hitching on an extra team, which is often the case.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' 1. The combination, in a wagon-tongue support, of the brackets a, rod 6, sheave 0, chain (Z, and hook c, said brackets to being adapted to connect with the sides of a box, g, uprights h, or other parts of a wagon-body, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a wagon-tongue support, of the brackets a, uprights h, rod 12, sheave 0, chain (2, and hook c, said uprights being adapted to connect with the sides of a wagonbed, 2', substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the box or other supporting part of a wagon-body and with the tongue m, of the brackets a, rod 1), sheave 0, chain d, hook c, and ring f, substantially as described.
WVILLIAM PENN MARTIN.
