UNITED STMTES PATENT Erica,
FREDERICK C. ANDERTON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO SAMUEL DINSMORE, OF SAME PLACE.
FAN-BLOWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,098, dated May 2'7, 1884.
Application filed March 7, 1882.
T all whom t may con/cern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK CHARLEs ANDERTON, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have'invented 5 a new and useful fan-blower for producing 0r supplying through any-convenient outlet or supply pipe a blast or current of air, gas, or other fluid or liquid, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fan-blowers wherein supplemental blowing devices are combined with the fairchamber, with a view to increase the volume of air being faken in and delivered 5 and my improvement consists in certain improved applica-y tion and combination of parts to and with a blower-case, whereby I am able to augment the power of a fan to such an extent that a blower of given capacity can be afforded at less cost than heretofore. y
The following description fully explains the nature of my said improvements and the manner in which I construct, apply, and use the same, the accompanying drawings being referred to by figures and letters.
Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of the device; Fig. 2, a vertical section of one of the side fans and its casing; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the apparatus.
To the central opening at each side of a blower-case, A, of usual form, I apply an annular disk or plate, B, having around its circular opening a wide flange, B. Short cylindrical extensions of the case at the suction or inlet openings are thus formed, through which the shaft D is carried." Yokes or brackets y y, of usual character, are fixed outside of the openings to support the shaft and give a clear, unobstructed space around and close to the shaft within the extensions. Within each flange or rim B, I place a small supplemental fan, E, composed of a number of blades, e, fixed to a hub, E, in a spiral mannerand with an inclination across the direction of rotation of the shaft. Each fan is slipped over the end of the shaft and secured'in place in any convenient manner 5 and when thus fixed in place the fan fits the space within the rim B closely, but with sufiicient clearance between the ends of the blades and the rim to permit rotation without contact. The breadth (No model.)
across the ends of the spirally-set blades is about equal to the width of the rim, and the blades then occupy the space all around the shaft, excepting that which is taken by the hub. The pitch or set of the blades of one fan is the reverse of those in the other, so that both fans, revolving in the same direction, drive toward the center space or 4chamber of the case. The same shaft, D, also carries the 6o main fan F, and the three fans are driven `by the one shaft at the same rate of speed f Now, as thus applied and combined, the supplemental fans, revolving continuously with the principal fan, operate to draw in and deliver into the center of the case an increased body of air and a greater volume than can be produced bythe power of the main fan alone. The movements ofthe two fans being uniform and continuous, their action upon the air in- 7o comingthrough the extensions of the case is smooth and regular, they act practically through the whole area of the opening and close to the center, and by such operation they force and deliver the air from both sides -7 5 into the center of the case-chamber and at the` heels of the blades or vanes of its fan. From this there results an even motion and action of the blower without jar or vibration, and an increased force or pressure of the out- 8o coming stream of air at the outlet.
Vhat I desire to claim isl. In a fan-blower, the combination, with the main fan F, set in line with the blowercase, of the two smaller auxiliary fans E, set one on each side of the main fan, and each having one side exposed to the atmosphere without cover, and having blades e, drawing in the air and deliveringit to the center of the main fan, as set forth. 9o
2. In a fan-blower, the combination of the blower-case and annular disks or plates B, having the wide flanges B,surrounding the circular openings, the yokes y y, shaft D, central fan, F, and side fans, E, revolving in the cir- `.9 5 cular openings surrounded by the flanges B', substantially as set forth.
FREDERICK C. ANDERTON.
