Description

June 27, 1961 D. H. GASTON COSMETIC KIT Filed Sept. 14, 1959 INVENTOR. DONALD H. GASTON BY W: g
A TTORIVEY United States Patent 9 2,989,756 COSMETIC KIT Donald H. Gaston, 4572 El Cerrito, San Diego 15, Calif. Filed Sept. 14, 1959, Ser. No. 839,698 8 Claims. (Cl. 4--168) The present invention relates to a portable and foldable cosmetic kit of the type including hinged lower and upper sections. The lower section forms a housing for cosmetics, a razor, toothbrushes and other toilet articles and which also forms a platform for supporting the rim of a removable wash basin. The upper section forms a tank for water and also a compartment for a drawer which latter houses the sections of a tripod, used for supporting the kit.
The bottom of the lower section is provided with a rearwardly facing abutment, and the upper section is provided with an abutment which is arranged to engage the abutment on the lower section when the hinged upper section is moved substantially 90 i.e. to the position in which the kit is used, whereby, when the kit is supported by a tripod, the sections are supported at 90 with respect to one another.
The pivotal connection between upper and lower sections is so disposed that the wall which functions as the rear wall of the upper section when the kit is folded closed, functions as the bottom supporting wall when the kit is in open position, i.e. it lies in the same horizontal plane as the bottom of the lower frame.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the upper section overhangs the lower section when the kit is in open position, and a horizontally extendible foot is provided which telescopes with the lower section and projects to below the upper section and thereby stabilizes the stand. 4
Other objects and features of the present invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the following specification and appended drawings Wherein are illustrated preferred forms of the invention, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view showing the top, the right side and the rear of the kit while it is in folded position.
FIGURE 2 is a left side view of the kit in folded position.
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line 3-3 and showing the sections disposed one above the other.
FIGURE 4 is a fragmentary section view showing the kit in operative position supported by tripods, two of the three legs only being shown.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the kit 20 includes two main sections, namely, the lower section 22 and the upper section 24. The lower section 22 includes a bottom wall 26, a front wall 28, a left side wall 30, and a right side wall 32, and an arcuately shaped rear Wall 34, formed preferably of one sheet of material and includes top wall 36. The top wall 36 is provided with a circular opening 38 into which a wash basin 40 may be inserted, the top wall forming a support for the rim 42 of the basin 40. Preferably the section 22 is formed of a plastic which is reinforced with fiberglass. The top 36 is suitably welded to the upper edge of the side walls. The right and left side walls 30 and 32 carry bushings 44 for trunnions or pivot pins 46.
The upper section 24 includes a top wall 50, a front wall 52, a rear wall 54, a left side wall 56 and a right side wall 58. These walls are formed integrally of a suitable plastic also reinforced with fiberglass. The side walls 56 and 58 are provided with reinforcing portions 60 and 62 respectively which extend downwardly and are provided with bushings 64 which register with bushings 44 and receive the trunnions or pivot pins 46 whereby the upper section 24 is hingedly supported by the lower section 22. It will be observed that the rear wall 54 of section 24 extends slightly rearwardly of the rear end of section 22 whereby, when the upper section 24 is moved upwardly about the pivot pins 46, the rear of section 24 receives the rear of section 22, as is more clearly shown in FIGURE 4.
Referring particularly to FIGURES 3 and 4, it will be seen that the rear end of the bottom wall 26 of section 22 is provided with a shoulder or abutment 64 which extends completely across the width of section 22, and, the bottom '66 of the rear wall 54 provides a shoulder or abutment which is arranged to engage the abutment 64 .on the front wall 26 of section 22 so as to limit the movement of the sections with respect to one another to approximately Also the axis of the pivot pins 46 is such that when the kit is in open position the beads 68 on the rear wall 54 of section 24 lie in the same horizontal plane as the bottom 26 of section 22, whereby both sections are stabilized when the kit is standing in open position on a stand or table.
Section 24 also provides a tank 70. This tank is formed by a rear wall 72, the front wall 52, the top wall 50 and a bottom wall 74. These walls 72 and 74 are also formed of a suitable plastic reinforced with fiberglass and are suitably welded to one another and to the top and side walls of the upper section. The front wall 52 is provided with an opening through which water is inserted and the opening is closed by a threaded plug 76. A series of reinforcing ribs 78 having openings 80 therein extend between the walls 50 and 74 and 72 and 52. The front of section 24 is provided with a grip portion 82 which may also be formed of reinforcing plastic and may be provided with a finger opening 84. This grip 82 is suitably welded to the front wall 52.
It will be observed from the drawings that there is a space provided between rear walls 54 and 72. An opening 86 is provided in the side wall 56 of section 24 for receiving a container 88 having a handle 90. This container supports the sections 92 of the three legs of the tripod for storing the same.
The rear wall 72 of the tank 70 is provided with three sockets 94 spaced equal distances from one another. These sockets are interiorly threaded as at 96 and receive the male ends of the tripod sections 92. Three holes 98 are provided in the rear wall 54 through which the sections 92 are extended or inserted when they are screwed into the sockets 96. FIGURE 4 shows the kit being supported by the tripod, two legs only of which are shown. It will be observed from this FIGURE 4 that the upper section is held in vertical position by the legs 92 and the lower section 22 is held in horizontal position by reason of the abutment 64 thereof in engagement with the abutment 66 of the upper section.
The wall 74 of the tank 70 carries a coupling 100 which in turn supports a faucet 102 having an outlet cock 104 and a push button control valve, the push button being basin 40 for the storage of cosmetics, razors, toothbrushes and other toilet articles.
Obviously, also the basin may be used for storing toilet articles when the basin is not being used as such.
The reinforcing webs should each be provided with holes 128 so as to provide for intercommunication between web sections at the extreme bottom of the webs so that all sections between the webs can be drained of water.
While a preferred embodiment of the invention has been specifically disclosed, it is understood that the invention is not limited thereto as many variations will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art and the invention is to be given its broadest possible interpretation within the terms of the following claims.
