2 Claims. (Cl. 20-40) Y This invention relates to a window construction, and more particularly to a protective double window.
A primary object of Vthis invention is the provision of a double protective window, particularly adapted as a protective measure against radiation, radio active fallout, remote blast, andlow heat as a result of fire storm or the like created by nuclear fission or fusion.
A primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a double protective window, having readily removable and replaceable glass panes, provision being made for the substitution of wood, plastic, metallic or other sheet for a shattered inner or outer glass pane or both.
A further object of the invention is the provision of such a device having means whereby shattered panes may be replaced with a minimum of time, effort and diliculty.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a double window of this character having its panes or closures relatively widely spaced, in order to provide an insulating air space therebetween.
A further and more specific object of the invention is the provision of an improved window frame, adapted readily to secure such removable and replaceable window panes in position. Y
A further specific object of the invention is the provision of such a window frame completely surrounded by insulating reproof material.
An additional specific object of the invention resides in the provision of such a device carrying a temperature responsive fire extinguishing element positioned between the panes of the double window.
As conducive to a clearer understanding of this invention, it may here be pointed out that windows are the primary weakness of buildings. The window of the instant invention provides a complete shelter plan against atmospheric poisons, and 'dre storm, by the use of a window chamber where atmospheric poisons, may settle out and out of which the poisons may be washed. This chamber is also a dead air insulation space, and is arranged as a re extinguishing area or space chamber where tire extinguishing gas or vapor can expand or diifuse to pro vide a contained wall of protection in the event flames break through the shieldings or sash forming the chamber. The shieldings in turn are arranged to provide relatively high resistance against wind blast and explosive blasts, provided neither are of too great force. Such shieldings in window chamber comprise part `of a window structure in the window openings, and the related elements are congruous to windows and window walls. Y
An object of this invention is therefore to overcome this weakness. j
Further in the event of an attack or other incident causing nuclear or thermal reactivity, in the event of evacuation of cities and villages, it becomes essential to protect buildings, in uncontaminated and unburned condition. The window Vof the instant invention provides means whereby such protection may be obtained, and further the window of the instant invention provides protection to a degree in unevacuated areas.
In the event that a window pane is broken, this invention provides means whereby it may be readily replaced by a substitute pane, or by a protective shielding of laminated material such as plywood, asbestos board, plastic material or any other desired material. In outlying areas away from a bomb blast, the plywood may be used basic ally for the purpose of preventing radioactive contamination, while in areas closer to the center of the blast which are not destroyed, reprooing material may be employed as a substitute material for the glass panes, and suitably reinforced to provide additional protection against re or ire storm as well as including the ingress of dangerous gases or radioactive fallout.
Still other objects will in part be obvious, and in part be pointed out as the description of the invention proceeds, and shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the inventive concept.
Still other objects reside in the combinations of elements, arrangements of parts, and features of construction, all as will be more fully pointed out hereinafter.

Having reference now to the drawings, and more particularly to FIGURE l, there is generally indicated at 10 a window frame embodying the double sash of the instant invention. The frame includes jambs 11, and mouldings 12 and 13 carry inner and outer sashes14l and 15, as best shown in FIGURE 2. In cross sectional conguration, one form of the invention comprises a moulding 16, which is at on its outer side, and which is adapted to be secured as by means of counter sunky screws 17 into the sides and top of the window opening. The plate 16 includes a depending front flange 18, which is provided with a groove 19,A at its lower extremity facing` outwardly, and forwardly projecting portion 20, also provided with a longitudinal groove 21, similar to the groove 19, the grooves 19 and 21 being adapted for the reception of a suitable facing plate 22. The inner side of the ange 18 is provided with a longitudinally extending channel 23 or shoulder, which is adapted to accommodate the forwardly projecting end portion 24 of one or more dogs generally indicated at 25, each of which includes a thickened portion 26, having a threaded bore 27 being adapted for the reception of a screw member 28, having -a rounded extremity 29. As best shown in FIGUREl, any
desired number of dogs 25 may be employed about the.
margin of the frame, for securing the outer window sash 15 in position. The end of screw 28 is adapted to engage a substantially L-shaped clamping bar 30, which includes a depending flange 31. The flange 31 is adapted tol engage behind the substantially L-shaped edge 32 of the.
sash 14, the glass 14a being suitably puttied in position as by means of putty 33 in the L-shaped flange;
face of the vertical flange, when considering the connection to the top rail of the window, 30a of the L-shaped clamping bar 30, while the horizontal flange 32b of L- shaped edge 32 extends beneath the horizontal flange 30b of L-shaped clamping bar 30. The depending flange 31 of the L-shaped clamping bar 30 lies rearwardly of the depending L-shaped edge 32 of the outer sash 14. In the assembly of the device the dogs 25 are suitably positioned with their forward extremities in the vchannels 23, and their rearward extremities engaged by a depending ange 35.V The screws 28 are tightened into abutting engagement with the flanges 30a, which have positioned between them and the inner face of depending flange 18 sealing strips 36. Additional sealing strips 37 are positioned between the flange 34 and the outer side of the flange 30a, thus affording an effective and tight seal. Further sealing strips 38 may be positioned between the outer side of the flange 31, and the inner side of the upper portion of the flange 32, to effect a tight seal, The outer sash 14 is suitably spaced from the outer sash, and includes glass a secured in position by means of putty 33b. The putty secures the glass pane 15a within a substantially L-shaped mounting member generally indicated at 32' and identical in configuration to the member 32.
The member 32' includes a vertical flange 32" similar to the ange 32a, a horizontal ange 32" similar to the flange 32b and a relatively short vertical flange 34 substantially identical to the flange 34.
A sash clamping bracket 40 similar in general contiguration to the clamping bar 30 is also provided, and includes a vertical ange 41, adapted to seat rearwardly of the flange 32", and a horizontal flange 42 adapted to be positioned adjacent the horizontal flange 32". The clamping member also includes a vertical flange 43, which is substantially longer than the flange 30a, it being noted that the inner sash is preferably of smaller overall dimensions that the outer sash. A sealing strip 37 is positioned between the flange 34' and the lower portion of the vertical flange 43, while a second sealing strip 38' is positioned between the flange 41 and the flange 42", the sealing strips 37' and 38' being substantially identical to the corresponding strips 37 and 38. The vertical flange 43 is provided with any suitable number of threaded openings 44, adapted to be engaged by threaded plug members 45, the plug members having heads 46 for closing the apertures, the plugs 45 being readily removable, in order to permit the introduction of a hose or the like into the space between the inner sash 15 and the outer sash 14, for the purpose of sluicing out the space with water, in the event that it becomes contaminated. Such contarnination may occur if the outer sash 14 is broken, and the space may be suitably flushed prior to removal of the inner sash to remove contaminating material, prior to replacement of the outer sash in a manner to be more fully described hereinafter. The upper portion of vertical ilange 43 extends upwardly adjacent a substantially V- shaped member 50, which has a forwardly extending arm 51, and a rounded extremity 52. The extremity 52 seats in a rounded groove 53 in the molding 16. The molding also includes a depending intermediate ange 54, provided with a longitudinally extending channel 55, which engages an offset lug 56 on the straight side 58 of the V- shaped member 50. The lug 56 forms a shoulder 57, which is adapted to engage the reduced end 24 of a dog generally indicated at the dog including a thickened portion 26 and a threaded bore 27', for the accommodation of a screw 28 having a rounded end 29. Each dog 25 is substantially identical to each dog 25 with the exception of the fact that a groove 59 in the upper portion of the thickened part 26' thereof. The groove 59 is adapted to accommodate the horizontal iiange 60 of a sheathing member 61, which also includes a depending angled a'nge 62 which abuts the inner side of the vertical flange 4 1, serving as a protective covering for the threaded plug members 45. The sheathing member 61 `is provided at suitable spaced intervals with apertures, through which the heads of screws 28 extend, serving to hold the sheathing member 61 in position. A sealing strip 36' identical to the sealing strip 36 is provided between the outer side of the vertical ange 43, and the inner side of the straight side 58 of the V-shaped member 50.
The construction is substantially identical about the four sides of the window sash, with the exception of the moulding 16', which includes a at under surface as do all the other plates, and a substantially identical upper configuration, the only distinction residing in the provision of suitable drainage ports 65 extending through the moulding to permit the egress of water inserted into the space between the sashes 14 and 15. The moulding 16' seats on a clamping plate 68 mounted on a stool 69, The member 70 is forwardly inclined, and carries at its forward end a baille 71, underlying the drainage ports 65. Seated on the baille is a flange plate 72, provided with lower drainage openings 72', the bale 71 having secured thereto as by means of screws 73, an angle member 74, upon the horizontal flange 75 of which seats the forward end of the moulding 16'.
In all other respects the lower construction or sill construction of the frame is identical to the constructions of the top rail and jambs.
FIGURE 6 discloses a modified form of construction, wherein a moulding 16a in all respects similar to the moulding 16, and including a depending flange 18 and an intermediate flange 54' and a rear ange 59', adapted for the accommodation of the rear portion of the dog 25 is provided. 'I'lie moulding 16a is adapted to be mounted in a metal building, the wall of which is generally indicated at 70', and provided with a transverse channel 71, which is adapted to be filled with cementitious or insulating material 72. A T-shaped transverse reinforcing bar 73' is provided and underlies the moulding 16a serving as a support therefor. The cementitious or insulating material Valso includes a forwardly extending inclined flange 75', which extends upwardly to the top of the flange 18', and overlies the facing strip 22'.
This cementitious or other reproof or insulating material extends about the four sides of the window.
FIGURE 7 discloses 'a similar but modified form of construction, wherein the window is surrounded by a moulding 80, `secured in position by means of screws 81, the plates including a facing flange 82 having a slot 83 therein for the accommodation of the reduced end of a dog 25'. The screw 28 in this instance bears directly against a sheet of laminated material 84, which engages a sealing strip 85 positioned therebetween and the facing member 82. A removable rear facing member 86 seats in a channel 87 in the under side on the inside of moulding 80, the rear facing member 86 also having a vertical leg 87' with an offset longitudinally extending lug 88 thereon which seats in the groove 89 in a depending flange 90 on the under side of the moulding 80. The inner face of the groove 89 has a sealing strip 91 extending therealong, which serves to hold in position an inner sheet of laminated material 92, the latter being held in position by means of a dog 25' and a screw 28. The laminated sheet 92 is provided with a bushing 93 interiorly threaded to accommodate a plug 94, having a head 95, the plug 94 serving the identical purpose as that of the previously described plug 45. Laterally extending reinforcing bars 96 and 97 may be applied to the inner surface of the sheets 84 and 92 respectively for the reinforcement if desired.
In this modification a thermally actuatable re extinguishing bulb 98 is suspended as by means of a hook 99 from an eye 100 secured to the moulding 80, in the space between the laminated members 84 and 92. In the event that the outer member is ruptured, or that tire is started between the members 84 and 92, the bulb 98 will release a re extinguishing gas or liquid that will extinguish the tire inthis space. In the event that the space becomes contaminated the plug 94 may be removed, and water sluiced into the space between the laminated plates or panes 84 and 92 for cleansing the space.
It will be understood that this modification like the preceding modiication is initially provided with glass panes, and that the laminated sheets, which may be comprised of any desired material as above stated, are adapted as replacements after the glass has been shattered. Obviously such sheets may be employed in the foregoing modifications .in replacement of the sash members 14 and 15 inthe event that these sash members become shattered.
A still further modification is shown in FIGURE 8, wherein a moulding 101 is secured to the Window opening of a wooden building as by means of screws 102, the moulding 101 having a forward depending ange 103, and a groove 104 outwardly thereof, land a similar intermediate depending flange 105 with a groove 106. Shoulders 107 and 108 at intermediate and rear points of the plate respectively, serve to engage L-shaped securing brackets 110 and 111 respectively, which brackets serve respectively to hold elongated V-shaped ange members 112 and 113 respectively in position. The members 112 and 113 include respectively vertical legs 114 and 115, each provided with an oifset lug 116 and 117 respectively adapted to seat in longitudinally extending grooves 118 and 119 formed in the inner faces of anges 103 and 105 respectively.
Seated between the inner face of the depending ange 114 and Ithe flange 110 is the frame 120 of an outer wooden window 121, a suitable sealing strip 122 being provided between the frame 120 and the flange 114. Similarily the frame 123 of an inner sash 124 is secured between the ange 111 and the inner surface of the ange 115, a suitable sealing strip 125 also being provided.
The arrangement and operation of lthis modification of the invention is substantially identical to those previously discussed.
From the foregoing the use and operation of this im vention should be readily understandable. Initially the double sashes are held in position by their respective dogs, positioned in suitably spaced intervals about the periphery of the sash. The double window affords protection against heat and radio active contamination, in the event that a nuclear explosion occurs at a distance from the shielding double window. In the event that the explosion is somewhat closer, and one or both glass panes are shattered, they may be immediately replaced, simply by the loosening of the screws 28, and the removal of their associated dogs 25 and 25. Either an additional pane may be promptly inserted if such is available, or failing this a protective sheet, such as 84 and/ or 92 may be promptly substituted, and upon repositioning of the associated dogs 25 and 25' securely sealed in position, to afford additional protection against heat, iire, radiation, smoke, and other hazards incident to the catastrophe.
In the event that a lire extinguisher 98 is employed with any of the forms of this invention, an increase in temperature will occasion the operation of the extinguisher, and after the substitute panels have been placed in position, or, prior thereto in accordance with conditions either the plug 45 or 94 may be removed, and the interior of the space between the panes or protective sheets may be ushed out with water to relieve the contamination.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided an improved double window, which accomplishes all of the objects of this invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical importance and utility and protective efficiency.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made of the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative, and not in a limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
1. A double window construction comprising a double sash supporting frame embodying jambs and window mouldings, an inwardly extended front iiange forming a part of said sash supporting frame, spaced from the front edge of said sash supporting frame, an inwardly extended rear flange formed along the rear edge of said sash supporting frame, an inwardly extended central flange formed at a point intermediate the front and rear edges of said frame, window sashes mounted within said sash supporting frame, sash clamping brackets in which said window sashes are secured, dogs slidable between said central flange and front and rear flanges, and securing screws threaded in said dogs engageable with said clamping bracket members securing said bracket members and the sashes supported therein, Within said sash supporting frame.
2. A double window construction comprising a double sash supporting frame embodying jambs and window mouldings, an inwardly extended front flange Iformed adjacent to the front edge of said sash supporting frame, an inwardly extended rear ange formed adjacent to the rear edge of said sash supporting frame, an inwardly extended intermediate ange formed between the front and rear edges of said frame, in parallel spaced relation with said front and rear anges providing front and rear sash receiving spaces, said intermediate flange presenting shoulders, a removable clamping bracket positioned over said intermediate ange in contact with said shoulders, said clamping bracket including vertical flanges between which a window sash is mounted, dogs slidable between said rear inwardly extended flange and one of said vertical iianges of said clamping bracket, and screws threaded horizontally through said dogs contacting said clamping bracket forcing said clamping bracket into clamping relation with said rearwardly clamping member.
