Description

(ModeL) I R. W. NELSON.
MEANS OF MOUNTING STEREOTYPE 0R ELEGTROTYPE PLATES- No. 298,703. Patented May 13,1884.-
FZ/y./5. N\\\\\\ \N T WIILESSESI Inventor:
gm isg I ROBERT W. NELSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGN OR TO THE; AMERICAN PRESS ASSOCIATION, OF SAME PLACE.
MEANS FOR MOUNTING STEREOTYPE OR ELECTROTYPE PLATES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent no. 298,703, dated May 13, 1884.
Application filed August 7, 1882.
i To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT W. Memoir, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Means for Mounting Stereotype and Electrotype Plates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide simple and economical means for mounting and securing separable plates or blocks for use in the columns of newspapers, in book zvork, or
. for other purposes. This I accomplish as follows: I cast the plate and block separately and provide them with plain surfaces at their line of contact. In the plate I cut an inclined longitudinal groove near the center of itsnnder side. In the base or block I either cut a similar groove for the insertion of a feather over which the groove in the plate falls, or cast a feather on the base for the purpose above stated. Fitting the feather into the grooves brings the plain surfaces of plate and base together, and when thus fitted the plate and base are locked in the form by any suitable means, and are ready for use.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my invention, showing the plate at right angles to the block; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
A represents an ordinary block having an inclined feather, b, running, preferably, 1011- gitudinally and centrally over its face, and made of a strip of metal or other material i11- serted in a correspondingly-inclined groove in or cast in one piece with the block A.
B is the plate, provided with the groove 0, formed on its under side, and at an angle of (ModeL) inclination corresponding with that of the feather b.
In order to fasten the plate to the base, groove 0 in the plate is dropped over the feather in the direction of the incline of said feather, and then obliquely downward until the contiguous plain surfaces of the plate B and block A meet. The whole device is then looked in the form, and the plate is rigidly held in place by the surrounding furniture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A base-block and a stereotype-plate, the two parts meeting each other on one plane, in combination with an inclined key or lug eX- tending from the meeting face of one part into an inclined recess in the meeting face of the otherpart, and thus securing the plate to the block.
2. The base A, provided with the inclined feather projecting from the upper side thereof, which side otherwise is a plain surface, substantially as described.
3. The plate B, having a plain under side, provided with an inclined groove in said side for the reception of a feather.
4.. The combination of the base with feather b, the latter removably inserted in an inclined groove in the upper side of and projecting above said base.
5. The combination of base A, having an inclined groove in its upper side, the feather b, and the plate B, provided in its under side with an inclined groove.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affiX my signature in presonce of two witnesses.
ROBERT W. NELSON.
