MATCH BOX HOLDER.
No. 298,641. Patented May 18, 1884.

WILLIAM N. WEEDEN, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
MATCH-BOX HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,641, dated May 13, 1884.
Application filed September 10, 1883. (No model.)
In theannexed drawings, A represents the .To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. Wnnnnx, of New Bedford, in the county of Bristol, and in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Box Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact, description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a, perspective view of my device as arranged for use upon a wall. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of said device separate from a match box and provided with a receptacle for burnt matches; and Fig. 4 is a like view of the same arranged for use upon a mantelshelf or like horizontal support.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to furnish in a simple, efficient, and inexpensive form a safe and convenient means for holding a box of matches; and to this end it consists, principally, in a match-box holder composed of a back and a spring-clamp, which forms part of or is secured to the same, and is adapted to confine a box of matches between its inner face and said back, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
It consists, further, in a match-box holder composed of a back, a spring-clamp which is adapted to confine in place upon said back an interposed box of matches, and a stop that is box and to limit its downward motion, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.
It consists, further, in a match-box holder composed of a back, a springelamp for confining in place a match-box, and a stop for limiting the downward motion of such box, and provided with a receptacle for burnt matches, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
It consists, finally, in a match-box holder composed of a back, a spring-clamp for confining in place a match-box, a stop for limiting the downward motion of said box, and a base for supporting the device in a vertical position, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown and described.
back of my device, which back is constructed, preferably, from sheet metal, and may have any desired form and ornamentation. From a point near the lower end of the back A a clamp, a, constructed from spring metal, extends outward a distance equal to the thick ness of the largest match-box, and from thence upward nearly to the upper end of said back, the upper end of said clamp being somewhat nearer to the latter than is its lower end, as is seen in Fig. 3. I
As constructed, the back A and clamp a afford means whereby a matchbox, B, of any of the usual sizes, may be securely held, for which purpose said device is secured to or suspended from a wall or other vertical support, and said box placed upon said clamp and box.
In order that the box B may be properly supported and prevented from passing below the desired point, a stop, a, extends from the lower portion of the back A upward, with its end in position to engage with the end of the inner part of said box. By this arrangement said box is not only supported in position, but its outer part may be readily pushed down ward sufficientl y to expose the contents of said inner part and permit of the removal there from of matches without disturbing the for mer.
hen the back A is made from sheet metal, its side edges are preferably raised so as to form side guides for the box B, and to enable said box to be readily placed in position.
For convenience in disposing of the burnt matches, there is attached to the lower end of horizontally forward, and has such size and depth as may be desired.
The device described is intended for attachment to or suspension from a vertical support a but for use upon a mantelshelf, table, or other horizontal support, a base, a, is secured to the lower end of the back A, and extends in 4 each direction therefrom a sufficient distance to furnish the necessary bearing.
This device is preferably constructed from sheet metal, and the clamp, stop, and tray for burnt matches formed of the same piece of metal with and at the same time as the back; but either of said parts may be formed sepathe back A a box or tray, of, which extends ratel y and afterward attached to said back, and, in place of sheet metal, paper board, wood, or other suitable material may be employed.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s 1. Amatch-box holder composed of a back adapted to receive the rear face of the box and hold said box from side movement, and a spring-clamp which forms part of or is secured to the same, and is adapted to confine a box of matches between its inner face and said back, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A match-box holder composed of a back, a spring-clamp which is adapted to confine in place upon said back an interposed box of matches, and a stop that is arranged to engage with the lower end of such box and to limit its downward motion, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
I 3. As an article of manufacture,a matchbox holder composed of a back, a springclamp for confining in place a match-box, and
a stop for limiting the downward motion of such box, and provided with a receptacle for burnt matches, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A match-box holder composed of a back,
a spring-clamp for confining in place a matchbox, a stop for limiting the downward motion of said box, and a base for supporting the device in a vertical position, substantially as and VILLIAM N. WEEDEN.
