Claims priority, application Belgium Apr. 8, 1957 1 Claim. (Cl. 19-128) The present invention relates to a separating drum for an automatic feeder for treating machines in the textile industry.
It is known to use combs with re-entrant teeth as working members in the separating drums of automatic feeders in the textile industry, which combs are internally controlled. This control means has a number of disadvantages, especially with regard to the difliculty of lubrication and others.
It is, therefore, one object of the present invention to provide a separating drum which avoids this disadvantage.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a separating drum, wherein the working members are carried by longitudinal supports, sliding in transverse seatings provided in the side members of the drum, which supports carry at each of their ends a roller or equivalent member capable of rotating in a rollway carried by the frame of the machine, and eccentric in relation to the spindle of the drum itself, so that the entry and emergence of the working members are subjected to an invariable mechanism.
It is yet another object of the present invention to provide a separating drum, wherein the working members comprise a series of teeth, points, needles or toothed blades, on the longitudinal supports. The last-mentioned embodiment of the working members has shown particularly advantageous, because it avoids the dead point in the movement.
It is also a further object of the present invention to provide a separating drum which may be associated with conveyor belts, drive cylinders or other devices intended to increase the working efficiency of the drum. It may also be used as a levelling comb, since it provides perfect levelling and continuous combing, and as drawing-out device, provided that the working members have a suitable inclination.
With these and other objects in view, which will become apparent in the following detailed description, the present invention will be clearly understood in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
Figures 1 and 2 are, respectively, a cross-section and a partial longitudinal section through a separating drum having needles as working members; and
Figs. 3 and 4 are, respectively, sections similar to those shown in Figs. 1 and 2, but of a separating drum which comprises toothed blades as working members.
Referring now to the drawing, and in particular to the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, over the entire length of a separating drum 1 there are provided seatings 2 disposed in a substantially radial direction, and the depth of which seatings 2 depends upon the height to which the working members are to rise. In these seatings 2 there may slide shafts 3 carrying externally teeth or needles 4, which leave an appropriate interval between them. These needles 4 are guided by immovable bars 5 embedded in the upper part of the seatings 2 and the guide bars function simultaneously as means for remov- "ice ing fibers from the scouring members during the return stroke of the latter. Outside the drum 1, each shaft 3 carries, on each side, a roller 6 capable of rotating in a rollway 7 formed in a plate 8 fixed to the frame of the machine. This plate 8 is mounted, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, eccentrically in relation to the spindle 9 of the drum 1. When the drum 1 rotates, the shafts 3 carrying the needles 4 are caused to slide simultaneously in their respective seatings 2, in such manner as to project progressively out of the drum '1 and to retract into it, according to the radius of eccentricity imparted to the plate 8, that is to say in such manner as to catch and detach respectively the material to be treated.
In Figs. 1 and 2 a separating drum is provided with twelve series of needles 4, but naturally this number, twelve, may be reduced, and only six or four series of needles may be'provided, for example, according to the diameter of the drum. Similarly, according to the intensity of the grip desired upon the material to be treated, the needles 4 and their seatings 2 can be more or less inclined in relation to the radii of the drum 1.
Referring now to Figs. 3 and 4, the same separating drum 1 has been shown, but the latter is now provided with slightly inclined toothed blades 10, in place of the plurality of needles 4, which blades 10 are again carried by shafts 3 sliding in the seatings 2 and guided between two blocks 11 embedded in the upper widened part of the said seatings 2. In this embodiment there are provided, as before, the rollers 6 and the rollway 7 formed in the plate 8, which is mounted eccentrically in relation to the spindle 9. Consequently the shafts 3 carrying the toothed blades 10 are also caused to slide in their respective seatings 2, so as to project from the drum 1 or to retract into it.
As has been stated above, it would also be possible again to provide a different number, larger or smaller, of toothed blades 10. Similarly these blades could be more inclined or could be arranged radially.
While I have disclosed several embodiments of the present invention, it is to be understood that these embodiments are given by example only and not in a limiting sense, the scope of the present invention being determined by the objects and the claim.
I claim:
A scouring device for textile fibers comprising a rotary shaft, a separating drum mounted on said shaft and having a plurality of longitudinal, substantially radial grooves, a scouring member movable radially in each of said grooves and projecting radially from said drum, a plurality of longitudinal rods having a roller at each of their ends, a circular guide channel disposed eccentrically relative to the rotating axis of said drum adjacent the lateral faces of the latter and receiving said rollers for guided movement of said longitudinal rods during rotation of said drum, guide bars having central, axial bores and individually replaceable at the outer end of each of said substantially radial grooves, said guide bars being immovable in radial direction in said grooves, each of said guide bars receiving a corresponding scouring member, said scouring members reciprocating substantially radially during rotation of said drum and said guide bars removing fibers from said scouring members during the return stroke of the latter.
