E. BANGS.
BOOM AND GAFF FOR VESSELS.
Patented May 13, 1884.
-W I T NEEEEEJ" K m/M ELIJAH BANGS, OF PROVINGETOWVN, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOM AND GAFF FOR VESSELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,545, dated May 13, 1884.
Application filed January 12, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELIJAH BANGS, of Provincetown, county of Barnstable, and State of Massach usetts, have invented certain Improvements in Booms and Gaffs for Vessels, of which the following is a specification. v
The object of this invention, in common with others of its class, is to reduce in the swinging motion of a boom or gaff friction between the lower end thereof and the mast.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure I is a side View of a part of a mast and my improved gaff. Fig. II is a top View of Fig. I. Fig. III is a View of the gaff as seen from the lower end. Fig. IV is a section taken through line :0 at, Fig. II.
A is the mast, and B the spar which forms the main portion of the The jaws of the gaff are denoted byO O.
D is the metallic frame, situated in a recess between the jaws of the gaff and supported by and adapted to swing on the fixed bolts a a, which pass through the said jaws.
E E are rollers located within the frame D, and fitted to revolve freely on the upright spindles b b. .It will be seen that the position of the rollers E is not affected by any change in angle of the gaff, as the frame D turns on the bolts a a.
Iam aware that booms have-been constructed with a frame confined between the jaws con taining rollers arranged one above the other,
the said rollers having a curved face to fit the circular mast, and that gaffs have been used with a frame containing two rollers with vertieal spindles, the said frame forming the jaws of the gaff; but I am not aware that prior to my invention. an open frame has been suspended on fixed bolts or trunnions in'a recess formed between the jaws, and provided with cylindrical rollers that turn on upright axes.
I therefore claim In combination with a boom 0r gaff having a recess formed between the jaws, an open frame supported in the said recess, which swings loosely on fixed bolts or rods extending through the said jaws, and two cylindrical friction-rollers adapted to turn on upright bolts extending through the said frame, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
