Description

(No Model.)
R. F. TRUSLOW.
CARPET STRETOHER.
WITNESSES M ywm INVENTOR TORNEYS- Patented May 13, 1884.
NITED STATES RUSSELL F. TRUSLOW', OF HUNTINGDON, TENNESSEE.
CARPET-STRETCH ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,521, dated May 13, 1884.
Application filed September 22, 1883. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUssELL F. TRUSLOW, of Huntingdon, in the county of Carroll and State of Tenne see, have invented a new and Improved Carpet-Stretcher, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device for stretching carpets and for holding one stretched until it is tacked down.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot'this specification, in which similarletters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved carpet-stretcher. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal elevation of the same. Fig.3 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line :0 as, Fig. 1.
A piece of board or plank, A, is provided with a longitudinal slot extending from one end to about the middle, and in the said slot a sliding piece, B, fits, which is provided on its outer end with a cross-piece, G, from which a series of spikes, studs, or pins, D, projectdownward. A cam-disk, E, provided with a suitable handle,is pivoted eocentrically on the top of the board A, and is adapted to press against a jaw or lug, F, projecting from the upper surface of the sliding piece '13. The plank or board A can be lengthened by means of a piece, G, united with the board A by dowel-pins, or in any other suitable manner,
whereby the carpet-stretcher can be lengthened to extend across theroom, the outer end of the piece G- resting against that side of the room opposite the one to which the carpet is to be stretched. The pins or studs D are pressed into the carpet, and by turning the cam-disk E the sliding piece B and the crosspiece 0 are moved in the direction of the arrow a, whereby the carpet will be stretched, the cain-disk actingon the jaw or lug F. The side edges of the sliding piece Bare grooved to receive the bulged edges of the slot, or, vice versa, the edges of the sliding piece can be bulged and the edges of the slot grooved.
I do not abandon or dedicate to the public any patentable feature set forth herein and not hereinafter claimed, but reserve the right to claim the same either in a reissue of any patent that may be granted upon this application or in other applications for Letters Patent that I may make.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I In a carpet-stretcher, the combination, with the base or board A, of the cam E, piece B G, and nose F, as shown and described.
RUSSELL F. TRUSLOW.
