JOHN DEVERS SMOOT, OF TAYLOR, TEXAS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,513, dated May 13, 1884.
Application filed February 20, 1854. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN D. Siroor, a citizen of the United States, residing at Taylor, in the county of lVlliamson and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Car-Coupling, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to car-couplings; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which shall be cheap and simple in its construction and thoroughly effective in its operation.
The invention consists in the improved construction vand combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a car-coupling constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view oi' the same, the top of the bumper and drawhead being removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line .r x or" Fig. 2, and Fig. et is a detail view in perspective of the couplinghook.
A represents the bumper, which is secured to the under side of a car in any suitable manner, the said bumper consisting of a rectangular box or frame having secured at its front end the usual draw-head, B. y
lVithin the bumper A, and at about the center of the same, is pivoted the coupling-latch, which consists of two arms, a a', having hooked ends a2, to securely hold the coupling-pin when in operation. The other or rear ends of these coupling-hooks rest within a block, C, having a V-shaped recess, o. This plate Gis provided upon its sides with grooves d, which are adapted to receive flanges c?, formed upon the inner end ofthe draw-head and near the rear end thereof. To the upper side, and near the end of the block C, is secured a chain, ci, which passes through an opening in the upper side of bumper, and having its end secured to a rod secured to thefront end of the car, whereby upon rotating said rod the block C is caused to slide forward, the rea-r ends of the arms being drawn together by the V-shaped recess in the block, thus opening the hooked ends of to be withdrawn. The hooked ends of the arms a c are held together by springs d,which are secured within the bumper, one end of the said springs resting against the side of the bumper and the other end engaging the ends of the arms. Thesesprings are secured within the bumper by means of a bolt, d', around which said springs are bent.
E represents the couplingpin, which con sists of the central portion, e, having the eX- tensions e ci projecting from either end of the centralportion, e. These extensions e e2 are formed upon their ends with hooks which are adapted to engage with the hooked arms a a of the bumper.
The operation is as follows: The couplingpin of the adjacent car strikes against the hooked ends ofthe arms, and the head or forked end thereof passes beyond the ends of the arms and is held therein, the springs upon the side of the bumper serving to securely retain the arms in close contact with the head of the coupling-pin. When it is desired to uncouple the cars, the rod carrying the connecting-chain is rotatedvhich causes the block C to slide forward and thus depress the rear ends of the pivoted arms, which action causes the forward ends to open, and thus allow the pin to be withdrawn.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that my improved coupler is simple in its construction, and that its operation is simple and yet effective.y
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a car-coupling, the combination, with flanges projecting from the inner sides of the'.
said bumper, substantially as set forth.
3. In a car-coupling, the combination, with a bumper, of arms pivoted therein, the for-A IOO ward ends of which are provided with hooks, springs arranged to bear against said arms, and having their rear ends resting within a and a chain secured to said sliding block and sliding block having a V-shaped recess, and connecting the same with a rod secured to the 15 springs secured Within the bumper, and havouter side of the oar at any suit-able point, ing their ends arranged to bear upon the substantially as set forth.
hooked ends of the arms, whereby the same In testimony that I claim the foregoing as are held in position, substantially as set forth. my own I have hereto afxed my signature in 4. In a oar-coupling, the combination, with presence of two Witnesses.
