Description

Nirn TATES ATENT tries.
LUBRICATOR.
EPECIFICATION forming peirt of Letters Patent No. 298A68, dated May 13, 1884.
Application filed February 25, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom zit may concern;
Be it known that we, WILLIAM Horn and JAMES HOMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Lubrioator, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to lubricating-cups, and more particularly to a valve for the cap or cover of the same; and it has for its object to provide a valve which will thoroughly and effectively close the opening in the cup, which is used for the introduction of oil or other lubricant, to prevent the entrance of dust or dirt and. other matter within the cup.
The invention consists in the combination, with the cap or cover of an oil-cup provided with a suitable oil-opening, of a hinged valve for closing said opening.
The invention further consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a detached view in perspective of the cap or cover of a lubricating-cup, the view being taken from the under side of said cap. Fig. 2 is a section on the line or x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the front of the cap.
I n the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures, Arepresents the cap or cover to the lubricating-cup, which may be of any suitable or preferred construction. Upon the under side of this cap or cover are located, at a suitable distance from the opening a of the oil-cup, depending brackets, B. In these brackets B is mounted ashaft, D, upon which is mounted the end of the valve E. This valve E may be of any suitable'construction; but our preferred form is as shown in Fig. 1. In this case the valve consists of the plate b, having the raised or convex portion 0 and the rearwardly-ourved portion 61' extension d, the
end of which isprovided with a perforation, c, and which is mounted upon the rod or shaft D. Upon this rod or shaft D is mounted a coil-spring, F, the central portion of which is bent outwardly to form a loop, f, which bears against the under side of the valve near its front end, and holds the same in close contact with the oil-opening and thoroughly and effectivel y closes the same. H represents a rod or shaft mounted in the brackets B, and which is for the purpose of limiting the backward movement of the valve by the loop f striking against said rod or shaft. When the valve is depressed ,it is stopped by the loop striking the rod or shaft.
It will be seen that by the construction above described a reliable and effective valve is produced, and onethat will keep the opening to the lubricating-cup closed and prevent access thereto of dust or dirt.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the cap or cover of a lubricating-cup provided with a suitable oil-opening, of a hinged valve arranged upon the under side thereof, substantially as set forth.-
2. The combination, with the cap or cover of a lubricating-cup provided with a suitable oil-opening, of a spring-pressed hinged valve arranged upon the under side of said cap, adapted to close said opening, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a cap or cover of a lubricating-cup provided with a suitable oilopening, of a hinged valve arranged upon the under side of said cap, the upper surface of which is made convex in form, substantially as set forth. I
4.. The combination, with a cap or cover of a lubricatingcup provided with-a suitable oilopening, of a hinged valve, the upper surface of which is made convex, and a spring for bolding the same in said oil-opening, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with the cap or cover of a lubricating-cup provided with a suitable oil-opening, of a hinged spring-pressed valve secured to the under side of said cap or cover, and made convex in form, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, with a cap or cover of alubricating-cup providedwith a suitable oilopening located at about the center of said cap, said opening being concave in form upon its under side, of a hinged spring-pressed valve secured to the under side of said cap or covering, and made convex in form to fit the consaid shaft and formed with a loop to engage cave opening of the said cap, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination, with a cap or cover of a lubricating-cup provided with a suitable oilopening, of a valve adapted to fit in said opening to close the same, said Valve being formed with an extension or projection upon its lower end, and a spring for holding the same in contact with the under side of the cover, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination, with a cap or cover of a 1ubricating-cup provided with a suitable oilopening, of a valve hinged at its rear end upon a shaft secured in downwardly projecting brackets, substantially as set forth.
9. The combination, with the cover of a lubricating-cup provided with a suitable oilopening, of a valve pivoted upon a shaft secured in brackets, and a spring mounted upon the under side of the valve, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
10. The combination, with the cover of a lubricating-eup provided with a suitable oilopening, of a valve for closing the same, pivoted upon a shaft secured in brackets to the under side of the cover, a coil-spring mounted upon said shaft and formed with a loop to bear against the under side of the valve, and arod for limiting the movement of said valve, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
