" NITED STATES EDWARD T. MASON AND FRANK A. BERGMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PACKAGE FOR MIXED PAINTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,393, dated May 13,1884.
Application filed February 1, 1884. (No model.)
1'0 ctZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, EDWARD T. MASON and FRANK A. BERGMAN, citizens of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Packages for Mixed Paints, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention, which relates to and is designed to be an improvement in some particulars upon the larger sizes of packages for mixed liquid paints, is fully disclosed in the drawings accompanying, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved can. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same upon the plane 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section enlarged.
In the drawings, A represents the body or cylinder, and A A the heads, of a metal vessel adapted to contain and preserve, say, five gallons or upward of mixed liquid paints. Theheads are of thin I 0 tin, to permitof their being readily cut out to admit the brush when the paint is to be used directly therefrom. The body is of thicker metal-say I X tin. As vessels of this size containing heavy liquids like these paints will be subject to great risk in handling, by reason of the thin metal heads, we provide them with wood jackets, the bodies B whereof extend beyond the vessel at both ends, so that the heads of the vessel will be sunken within such bodies sufficiently to render them reasonably safe from injury. The heads are, however, further protected by wood heads B, of thin stuff, as shown, so they may be also cutout. The latter are secured within the jacket by the interior hoops, O, nailed ortacked to the jacket. If these hoops are so attached as to be readily removable, the heads B may then be lifted out, instead of being cut through, when the can is to be opened.
In applying the cylindrical part of the jacket the wood is first bent tightly around the cylindrical vessel, and then secured by hoops D D, after which the heads B are put in and fastened. Thus the cylinderof the vessel and the cylinder of the jacket are made to fit one another so closely as to cause them mutually to support one another. The pack ages are filled at the opening covered by the screw-cap e, which is then soldered fast. Instead of this cap, a cap soldered to the head, as in fruit-cans, may be used. Being thus sealed, the package may safely be rolled, as a barrel is rolled, from one location to another. This adaptation is one benefit attending the invention. as the rolling operation mixes and retards the separation of the constituents of the paints, and for this reason we have sought to so form the package as to render rolling the most easy and natural method of moving it.
We claim 1. The package for mixed liquid paints, consisting of the sealed cylindrical vessel A A, the heads being of thin metal, and a wood jacket projecting beyond the heads of the vessel, and consisting of the cylinder B, the heads I113, and the hoops O D, substantially as speci- '2. The package for mixed liquid paints, consisting of the inner metal vessel having heads formed of thin metal, a covering-jacket pr0- jecting beyond said heads, and thin or readilyremovable wood heads secured in said jacket, substantially as specified.
