ALBERT G. DAYKIN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
HYDRANT AND STREET-WASH ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Pater-it No. 298,355, dated May 13, 1884-.
Application filed February 8, 1882. (No model.)
To all 2071.077?, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT G. DAYKIN, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Hydrants and Street- Vashers, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to hydrants or the like; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
The object of the invention is to produce a device which shall be inexpensive of manufacture and simple and efficient in serviceone which shall not only permit the free passage of water to the outlet, but which shall also, by the same action which closes the valve, allow the gravity of the water contained in the device above the valve to carry the same below the valve.
The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which forma part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 2, a similar view of the upper part of the device. Fig. 3 is a section of the valveseat frame, showing the relief-port in dotted lines. Fig. 4 is a view of the valve-frame, showing the longitudinal grooves in dotted lines, and Fig. 5 is a detached view of the valve which closes and discloses the reliefport.. Figs. 6 and 7 are details.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, A designates the case or' shell, having internal threads, a, which receive the threads ofthe valve-seat frame B. This frame B has two or more standards or arms, B', in one or more of which is formed a relief-port, I, which port has an opening from the inner surface of the frame B at b', and an outlet, b, below the valve-seat, as shown in Fig. 3.
C designates the valve, having an internally-threaded portion, c, adapted to receive a quick-screw, C', and longitudinal grooves c2, adapted to receive the arms d of a valveframe, D. This valve-frame D operates freely in the frame B, and serves to close or disclose the port I as the standard. or stein F is turned to the right or left. The valve-stem F is square in cross-section, and is composed of the two parts F and E, united by the coupling G E, having the right and left hand screws C and d. The stein has a male thread, d, which operates in the female thread (Z3 in the frame D, the pitch of which thread is much slower than that of the quick-screw C.
It will be observed that a turn of the spindle in either direction serves, iirst, to close or disclose the valve C upon its seat c', and then to close or disclose the relief-port I by a simple continuance of the same operation, assisted by the flexible packing-ring d2. By'this construction I am enabled to not only close the water-supply, but also to allow the water in the connections above the valve Cto gravitate below the said valve and either waste or return to the fountain.
vI deem it important that the valve-frame B have one or more of its standards or arms provided with a relief-port, connecting the space above thevalve with that below, thus affording a ready escape for the water in the connections above the valve bach into the fountain, and thus prevent freezing.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim is 1. In a water-hydrant, and in combination, thevalve-seat frame having one or more standards provided with a relief-port, connecting the space above the valve with the open air, a spindle having quick and slow right and left turn screws, adapted by the saine operation to close the water-supply and open the reliefport, as set forth. A
2. The frame B, having standards B', provided with relief-port I, combined with the valve C, stem F, and valve-frame D, as set forth.
3. The frame B, having standards B, provided with port I, combined with the stem F, valve C, having grooves c2, and the valveframe D, having arms d, as set forth.
4. The combination, with the spindle having threads of different pitch, of the valveseat frame B, the valve C, having grooves c2, and the -valve-frame D, having arms d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT Gr. DAYKIN.
