ROAD-CART.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,254, dated May 6, 1884.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARENCE H. STRAIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bryan, in the county of Williams and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Road-Carts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Fig. 2 is a bottom View of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views; and Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the clip, showing the axle, springs, and side braces in dotted lines.

This invention has relation to road-carts; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.

In the accompanying drawings, a designates the axle, and b b theside bars, which are clipped to the axle, and are braced to and virtually form an extension of the thills. The steps are secured to the front end of the side bars, b b, and the body 0 is connected nearits front to the side bars by check-straps d. The

elliptical springs e are those ordinarily used in vehicles, and are clipped to the axle and to the body-supports. The clips f, in this instance, are of peculiar construction, and serve as spring-blocksas Well as clips. These cl/ips f have a recess, f, to fit the axle, a transverse recess, f, to seat. the lower leaves of the springs, and a recess, for the braces g, the ends of which are secured to the side bars in vfront and in rear-of the axle, to prevent any lateral movement of the elliptical springs or the vehicle-body irrespective of the axle. The

' body-supports h are secured to the upper portions of the elliptical springs by T-fastenings and clips, or in any other suitable manner. A U-forin spring, 2', is secured to the upper side of the axle, extends forward, is bent upward and rearward, in this instance, and is secured to the bottom of the body at each side, as shown. These springs are fastened to the axle by shackles, extend forward, and are fastened to the under side of the-body, and may be of any conformation, and are intended to equalize the action of the elliptical springs under all circumstances, and over all inequalities of ground. 1 The body-sills k are recessed at Z, beneath the seat and directly above the axle. A slotted corrugated plate, m, carrying a headed nut-bolt, n, is secured to each sill over the recesses Z, the recesses receiving the heads of the bolts. The bolts pass down through bolt-holes in the body-supports h, which are cone-oval shape in cross-section, their upper rounded edges fitting the corrugations in the slotted plates, and the nuts 12 secure the body in the position to which it may have been adjusted, and hold it firmly in place. This adjustment is provided to adapt the body to the proper level when a horse of higher or lower stature is harnessed after the first adjustment.

This road-cart possesses the advantages of having an adjustable body on its supports to maintain the proper level where different horses are driven, and is braced to prevent lateral motion on the.axle, and the elliptical springs are equalized.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a roadcart, the combination, with the clips having recesses for the elliptical springs,

.the axle, and spring-braces, of the axle, elliptical springs, braces, and side bars, substantially as specified.

2. In a road-cart, the combination, with the body having the recessed body-sills covered with slotted corrugated plates carrying nutbolts, of the cone-oval shaped body-supports, having holes for the passage of the bolts, and a rounded upper face to fit the corrugations in the plates, substantially as specified.

8. Ina road-cart, the combination, with the axle, side bars, and body of the vehicle, .of the clips f, constructed as described, the elliptic springs, U form springs z, and the side braces, g, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially as specified.
