SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters .Patent No. 298,154, dated May 6, 1886i.

Be it known that I, JAMES F. Arwoon, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates to that class of buttons provided with shanks, but not to that class having wire loops, sometimes termed Shanks77 The object is toJprovide a pasf sage in the shank which will be adapted to accommodate a wire fastening without injury to the latter. Y
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure I is a view in perspective of a button embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a verti-. cal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar section with the fastening-wire in position. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the cup C detached.
A is the body of the button, constructed, as usual, of upper and under plates, a and a', formed into the shape'shown. The shank is composed of the external tube, B, spread into a flange, B, at its lower end, and the inner cup, C, having its bottom C'l convexe-concave in shape, as shown. Both the tube B andthe cup C are clinched by means of suitable inachinery against the inner surface of the portion a of the button in the well-known 1nanner, as shown.
In order to provide a passage for the fastening-wire D, vertical slots are cut on opposite sides of the tube B at b, said slots commencing to be broken.

By means of the convexe-concave bottom C' to fthe cup C the wire D, when drawn tightly against. it, as t would be in practice, i's curved, but not sharply bent, and hence is not liable The button is also given freedom of action without changing the bend n the wire. y
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
