BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters .Patent No. 298,154, dated May 6, 1886i.
Application filed October 10, 1853.
To @Z5 whom, may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. Arwoon, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates to that class of buttons provided with shanks, but not to that class having wire loops, sometimes termed Shanks77 The object is toJprovide a pasf sage in the shank which will be adapted to accommodate a wire fastening without injury to the latter. Y
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure I is a view in perspective of a button embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a verti-. cal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar section with the fastening-wire in position. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the cup C detached.
A is the body of the button, constructed, as usual, of upper and under plates, a and a', formed into the shape'shown. The shank is composed of the external tube, B, spread into a flange, B, at its lower end, and the inner cup, C, having its bottom C'l convexe-concave in shape, as shown. Both the tube B andthe cup C are clinched by means of suitable inachinery against the inner surface of the portion a of the button in the well-known 1nanner, as shown.
In order to provide a passage for the fastening-wire D, vertical slots are cut on opposite sides of the tube B at b, said slots commencing to be broken.
(No model.)
with the lower end or iianged portion of said tube and extending upward toward the point, where the portion c of the button joins the shank. Openings are also cut at opposite sides ofthe cup G at c, which coincide with the slots b in the tube B.
By means of the convexe-concave bottom C' to fthe cup C the wire D, when drawn tightly against. it, as t would be in practice, i's curved, but not sharply bent, and hence is not liable The button is also given freedom of action without changing the bend n the wire. y
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I. The herein-described button, provided with a hollow shank whose bottom or outer end is pressed inwardly into eonvexoconcave shape, as shown and described, said shank being provided with a transverse passage or perforation, whereby a wire for fastening pur-v
