Description
STEEL WRAP METHOD FOR BOWSTRING LOOPS Filed March 1, 1960 um, "I
United States Patent STEEL WRAP METHOD FOR BOWSTRING LOOPS Steele Harrison, 1-15 Berdan Ave., Fairlawn, NJ.
Filed Mar. 1, 1960, Ser. No. 12,089
3 Claims. (Cl. 57-160) This invention relates to archery equipment and, more particularly, to a bowstring therefor.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method for wrapping a bowstring loop in an efiicient and effective manner so as to prolong the useful life and eflectiveness thereof.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a method for applying reinforcing wraps to bowstring loops without exposing an unnecessary number of free ends, and to prevent fraying of the wrapped loops.
Still an additional object of the present invention is to provide a method for wrapping bowstring loops of the type described which may be varied according to the size and length of the bowstring material.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a securement wrapping forming the first step in the wrapping of a bowstring loop in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the portions illustrated in Figure 1 in a second wrapping step of the present invention;
Figure 3 is a side elevational view, illustrating a third wrapping step of the present invention;
Figure 4 is a side elevational view illustrating the last wrapping step of the present invention and illustrating a finished loop of a bowstring;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a completely wrapped bowstn'ng wrapped in accordance with the methods of the present invention.
Referring now to the drawing, a bowstring wrapped in accordance with the present invention is shown to be constructed from a plurality of treated strands 12 of any desired material. In making the first loop of the bowstring, a single tight wrap 14 is applied adjacent to one end of the strands 12. Upon completion, the single 2,981,053 Patented Apr. 25, 1961 wrapped portion 14 is folded upon itself to define a loop 15 having a bight and a pair of juxtaposed sides 13.
A securement wrap 16 is commenced at a point spaced from the ends of the sides 13 of the loop 15 in a wind- 5 ing direction away from the bight of the loop, and after a short distance is reversed in the manner shown in Figures 2 and 3 to provide a first overwrap 17 upon the first portion 16, and thence an extended securement portion 18 which overlaps the sides 13 of the loop portion. After extending over the sides 13 of the loop portion, the securement wrap is reversed in direction, as shown in Figure 4, so as to form a second overwrap 20 of approximately the same length as the first overwrap 17, and following which the bowstring loop is completed.
A similar wrapping is used to fabricate the other bowstring loop at the opposite end of the strands 12. A similar single wrap is used to reinforce the center arrow engaging portion 22, in the manner shown in Figure 5.
This method of wrapping produces a neat and extremely strong bowstring which has exceptional life and durability characteristics.
While this invention has been described with particular reference to the construction shown in the drawing, it is to be understood that such is not to be construed as imparting limitations upon the invention, which is best defined by the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The method of wrapping a bowstring loop comprising the steps of: singly wrapping a first portion, forming said wrapped first portion into a loop having a bight and a pair of sides, applying a securement Wrap to said sides of said loop to maintain said loop in proper form, wherein said securernent wrap is applied first at a position spaced from said sides of said loop and wound in a direction away from said bight a short distance and then toward said bight to form a first overwrap, and wherein said securement wrap is terminated by a second overwrap at the ends of said sides of said loop.
2. The method of wrapping a bowstring loop as set forth in claim 1, wherein said second overwrap is wound in a direction toward said first overwrap of said securement wrap,
3. The method of wrapping a bowstring loop as set forth in claim 2, wherein both overwraps are of substantially the same length and each of said overwraps is shorter than the length of said securement wrap.
