EDWIN NORTON, OF oHIoAeo, ILLINOIS, AssIcNORTo HIMsELF AND OLIVER W. NORTON, OF SAME PLAGE.
PAINT-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,018, dated May 6, 1884.
' i pplication tiled February l1, 1884. (No model.)
i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN NORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paint-Cans,' of which the followingisa specication. i
This invention relates to paint and other cans the heads or covers of which are double- Io seamed on after the can is filled. Y In doubleseaming heads on lled cans no internal mandrel or support can of ycourse `be used, and
therefore the flanges ofthe head and body forming the seam have heretofore always been fold- I 5 ed or turned outwardly, so that the seam, when completed, lies on the outside wall of the canbody, and if a secondary slip-cover is to be applied an offset in the can-body or other provision must be made, so that the Slipcover can 2o fit over the seam, and still have a frictional bearing against the exterior surface of the canbody.
4 It is the object of the present invention to provide acan the head of which may be douv ble-seamed on after the can is filled "by folding the anges of the head and body inwardly, so
that the seam, when formed, will lie on top of the can and within the circumferential line of the can-body, and thus not interfere with the 3o applicationof a slip-cover to the can.
result I accomplish by, .and herein my invention consists, providing the can withv an interior shoulder, against which the flanges of the seam may be folded, and which thus serves,
5 5 so to speak, as an interior mandrel or support in forming the seam. This interior shoulder I form by `turning aflange in at the top ofthe can-body and folding over it a seamless ring,
so that the shoulder is composed of three thick- 4o nesses of tin and the solder uniting the same.
The seamless ring has an upturned flange,
which is folded with the flange of the can-head into the double seam. As in this invention the seam rests snugly on the shoulder, the
seam and shoulder together give the can orits cover great strength and rigidity.
Y In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is a central vertical section of aoan embodying my invention, and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 This are sectional views showing the seam partially formed. c
It should be remarked that inthe drawings the thickness ofthe stock and size ofthe anges are greatly exaggerated, in order to show the same more clearly.
In the drawings, A represents the canbody, provided With the inturned flange a at its top, and B is the seamless ring, the lower part,v b, 6o of which is folded over said flange c and soldered thereto, so as to form an interior'shoulder or support on the can-body for the seam.
C is the can-head, provided with the uptirned flange c, which is folded with the up`- right flange or part b of the seamless ring into the double seam. kThe double seam, thus being folded inwardly, as shown, lies on top of the shulder and within the circumferential line of the can-body, so that the slip-cover D 7o may be readily applied.
In Fig. 2 the seamless ring is shown folded over the flange ofthe can-body. ln Fig. 3 the same is shown with the head applied, and in Fig. 4 the seamless ring is shown folded inf 75 lWardly over vthe flange of the head, the next step being to turn the whole flat down upon the head, as shown in Fig. 1.
The interior shoulder should project in slightly farther than the inner edge of the double seam, so that the revolving disk or chuck of the seaming-machine may derive some supportfrom said shoulder, and still not interfere with the folding of the seam.
What I claim is- 1. The combination, with a can-body provided With an interior shoulder to support the seam while it is being formed, of a can-head secured thereto by a double seam foldedinwardly and resting upon said shoulder, substantially as specified. y
2. The combination ofcan-bodyA, provided with inturned flange a, with seamless ring B, folded over said flange, and can-head C, having upturned flange c, folded with said seamless ring inwardly into a double seam, substantially as specified.
EDWIN NORTON.
