HERMAN BUOHHOLZ AND WILLIAM MORRIS, F JANESVILLE, WISCONSIN.
CARRIAGE-TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 297,968, dated May 6, 1884.
' Application filed December Q0, 1888. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HERMAN BUOHHOLZ and WILLIAM MORRIS, of Janesville, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new a'nd useful Improvements in Carriage-Tops; and we do hereby declare V the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains [O to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to an improvement in carriage-tops, the object of the same being to provide the carriage-top with a forward extension, whereby we are enabled to dispense view our invention consists incertain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in elevation showing our improvement in its open adjustment. Fig. 2 is a view thereof, with the dotted lines showing it in its halfopen adjustment and the'full lines in its closed adjustment; and Fig. 3 is a modification of our. improvement.
A, B, and 0 represent the bows of a carriage-top suitably attached to the frame or body of the carriage, and adapted to support the front, ,center, and rear thereof, respeet- 4o ively. The bows A and Care provided with pivot-holes, through which pass pivots F and G, which secure in position the top-brace H,
which is likewise provided with holes for the reception of the pivots F and G. The topprops I are pivotally secured to the frame J of the carriage, having their upper ends pivotally secured to the bows A, and are provided with an upwardly-closing joint, K. The end bows, A and G, are each pivotally at tached, near their upper ends, to the top-brace H, which latter is provided centrally between the end bows with a downwardly closing knuckle-joint, L, and forward of the bow A with an upwardly-closing knuckle-joint, M. This articulatedrod is for the purpose of holding the bows separated and the leather or other covering taut, while the top-prop I is adaptedto perform the-ordinary function of holding the bows in upright position. The top-braces H are each provided in front of the front bow with the bow N, which is rigidly. secured thereto by the rigid joint 0. Thus it will be seen that when the bows are held in an upright position and the top-brace straightened out, the bows are held apart, and the leather covering, which is secured to the front bows and the curved horizontal bow N, the outer ends of which are rigidly secured to the outer ends of the part 0 of the top-brace, is drawn perfectly taut, and so held in position. It will be also seen that when it is desired to incline the top, the top-prop I is displaced from its fixed position by means of the knucklejoint K, and the top-brace H likewise folded by means of the knuckle-joints M and L, thus permitting the top to fall backward; and by means of the upwardly-acting knuckle-joint M the extension N drops down and partially overlaps'and covers the interior of the top.
Instead of placing the bow of the extension in the same horizontal plane with the topbrace, we may place the said bow in a plane at an angle with the plane of the brace, as shown by the modification in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
By this construction the view from the interior of the carriage will be unobstructed.
Having fully described our invention, what we claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 7 1. In a folding carriage-top, the combina- 0 tion, with the bows, of the top-brace pivotally secured to the front and rear bows, and having knuckle-j oints at either side of its front pivot, a forwardly-extending curved bow rigidly secured to the front ends of the top-brace, and the cover secured to the bows and the forward extension, substantially as and for the I purpose set forth. Y
2. In a folding carriage-top, the combination, with the bows, of. a jointed brace pivot- .too
ally secured to the'front and rear bows, and a top-prop pivotally secured to the carriage frame, with its upper end pirotallysccured to upwardly-working knucklejoint, substanthe front bow at the juncture where the brace i tially as and for the purpose set forth.
is secured, substantially as and for the pnr- In testimony whereof we have signed this pose set forth. specification in the presence of two subscribing 5 3. In a folding carriage-top, the combinawitnesses.
tion, with the hows of a top-brace secured to the front and rear bows, and provided with HERMAN BUCHHOLZ. \VILLIAM MORRIS.
I l 1 l l I 1 l 1 l l r upwardly and downwardly working knuckle- \Vitnesses: joints,and a top-prop secured to the carriage- J. B. DOE, Jr., 10 frame and front bow, and provided with an A. L. \VICKHAM.
