UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
- JOHN W. HYATT, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE OELLULOID MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
PROCESS OF DESICCATING PYROXYLINE IN COMMINUTED FORM.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,935, dated April 29, 1884.
O Application filed November 28, 1881. (No model.)
To aZZ whom/ it may concern.- i
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. HYATT, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Process of Desiccating Pyroxyline in Comminuted .Form, of which the following is a specification, reference being had .to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to an improvement in the manufacture of celluloid and other pyroxyline compounds, and particularly to that process of manufacture in which the nitrocellulose is ground in water to a fine pulp by means of a machine, for illustration, such as is employed for preparing paper-pulp,the water being afterward expelled and the material then subjected to the further steps incident to its conversion.
My invention has for its object the subjection of the pulp, in a process similar to that above stated, to the action of an absorbent in aclosed vessel, the particles of the pulp being free to be moved about therein, and the absorbent being removed from direct contact with the pulp. This being an application for a process,I do not confine myself'herein to the employment ofany special absorbent or form of apparatus, the essential considerations being that the former be capable of readily taking up the moisture without injury to the pulp, and that the latter may be agitated without difficulty to insure the best and most rapid results.
In the accompanying drawing I illustrate a sectional view of a machine which may be used in the practice of the present invention; and in said drawing A denotes a rotating cylinder, mounted-on axles a a between the stand ards B B. The cylinder A has a lid, D, and contains sacks or bags of absorbent material, E E. Upon one of the axles a is applied a band-wheel, O, to which a belt may be connected-forthe purpose of rotating the cylinder.
In the practice of the invention I have found it advantageous to place the moist pulp in a closed vessel, wherein the absorbent, in porous bags or sacks of fibrous material, has
I been previously introduced, and then to agim tate the vessel, so as to bring all the particles 0 of pulp in proximity to said bags. After the bags have become loadedwith the moisture taken from the pulp, they may be withdrawn and fresh bags substituted therefor. This is the preferred method of adapting the invention to practical use; but it need not be followed unless desired. Its employment, however, is recommended, as is also the use of chloride of calcium as an absorbent.
In the manufacture to which the inven tion relates the moisture has heretofore been removed from the pulp by forming the latter into cakes, placing them between layers of bibulous material, and subjecting the whole to hydraulic pressure, as described in inbefore described, which consists in, first,
grinding the nitro-cellulose in water, and, second, removing the aqueous particles by agitating the nitro-cellulose in contact with an absorbent.
2. The process hereinbefore described of treating nitro-cellulose after it has been ground to a pulp in a liquid and prior to its conver --sion, which consists in agitating the pulp about absorbent materiallinclosed in porous coverings, the wholebeing within a closed vessel.
Intestirnony that I claim theforegoing improvement in process of desiccating material in comminuted form, as above described, I
have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of 0 October 1881.
JOHN W. HYATT.

Correction m It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 297,935, granted April 29, 1884, upon the application of John W. Hyatt, of Newark, New Jersey, for an improvement in the Process of DesiecatingPyroxyline in Comrninuted Form, the residence of the as signee was written and printed as of same place, whereas it should have been New York, New York and that the proper correction has been made in the files and records pertaining to the ease in the Patent Ofifiee, and should be read in the Letters Patent to make it conform thereto.
Signed, countersig'ned, and sealed this 6th day of May, A. D. 1884:.
M. L. JOSLYN, Acting Secretary of the Interior.
