I PASTE SUPPLYING APPARATUS FOR GRINDING MACHINES AND THE LIKE Filed Oct. 27. 1958 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 PASTE SUPPLYING APPARATUS FOR GRINDING MACHINES AND THE LIKE Werner Wrohbel, Nurtingen, Wurttemberg, Germany, as-
signor to Metabowerk Closs, Rauch & Schnizler K.G., Nurtingen, Wurttemberg, Germany f The present invention relates to grinding and/or polishing'machines in general, and more particularly to an improvedV apparatus for applying a paste-like substance:
to the periphery of rotating discoid or cylindrical elements which form part of, and are driven by, auchl machines.
The customary procedure of supplying ak grinding or v polishing paste tothe disks or brushes of grinding or Apolishing machines is to apply the paste by hand. vSuch procedure is rather time-consuming and quite uneconornical because the pasteY is applied in an uneven'layer. It has been observed that the time spent and quantities of paste `utilized by different Workmen operating withidentical brushes or disks are Widely diierent. Therefore, theapplication of paste ,by hand does not meetthe present-day requirements.4 c j `Attempts Were already made to construct apparatus operated by compressed airjfor automatically feeding a paste-like substance tothe rotating discoid elementspof such machines. The disadvantage of apparatus ofnfthis type is in that compressed air is seldom available in locations where the grinding or polishing machines are utilized. In addition, the compressed air escaping-from such apparatus generates air currents whirling up `the` dust and dirt which are'always present in locations Where a grinding or polishing `machine is operated. This is particularly undesirable when a polishingoperationis performed. c
rIfo avoid the just enumerated drawbacks of paste applicators operating With compressed air, such apparatus are often equipped with an electric or-like motor and with suitable reducing gearing to feed the paste at 'a desired rate against the periphery ofl a revolving discoid or cylin- 2,977,728 ifatented`Apr. 4, 19,61

An important object of the"present inventionfis to provide an apparatus for applying paste sticks to the kperiphery of a` rotating discoid `or lcylindrical element which operates in such manner that the paste sticks may be applied continuously without interruption in operation kof the machine of which the rotating 'element forms a component part. f 1
Another object of the invention'is to provide an 'apparatus of the above described characteristics which is capable of applying paste sticks of diiierent dimensions.
A further object of the invention is to provide. an apparatus as above set forth'which operates with'out a motor or compressed air, and inwhich the rate at which the' paste stick is fed against the periphery of a discoid or cylindrical elementmay be adjusted within a desired range. ,Alstill further object .of the invention is to provide an apparatus for applying paste to rotating discoid and/ or cylindrical elements of polishing machines andthe like .which is adjustable `in the radial and axial direction of the rotating element.
A yet `further objectl of the invention is to provide an apparatus as above set forthwhich is so constructed and which operates in such manner thateach paste stick is fullyV consumed before thenext one comes into Contact with the rotating member.
An additional object of the invention is to provide an assembly as above described which is capable of guiding elongated, short or broken paste sticks into contact with the rotating discoid or cylindrical element.
A concomitant object of the invention is to provide an apparatus for applying paste to rotating elementsV of grinding and/or polishingmachines which is so c'onstructed that the `rate'at which the paste is fed may be controlled andychangedv not only before and' after but also during the operation of such machines. l

The novel features which are considered as characteristic for the invention yare set forth in particular in the ap`- -prended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its construction and its method of operation, together with additionalobjects and advantages thereof, will be best understood from the following description of a specific embodiment when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. l is partly elevational and partly sectional view of the improved apparatus shown attached to the protecting shield ofa grinding or polishing disk, the section being taken on line I--I of Fig. 2 as seen in'the direction of arrows;
Fig. 2 is top plan View of the structure shown in Fig. 1; and l Figs. 3 `and 4 are detail sectional views taken, respectively, on lines III--III and IV-IV of Fig. 2.
Referring now in greater detail to Figs. 1 and 2, the improved paste applicator therein shown is mounted on `a support 3 which is fixed to, or integral with, the protecting shield 2 of a grinding or polishing disk or brush 1. The shield 2 is formed with a cutout or aperture 5 through which a grinding or polishing paste stick 4 is led toward and into contact with the periphery 26 of the disk. Support 3 carries or is integral with a pair of spaced guide rails 7 parallel with the axis of drive shaft 6 which latter mounts the grinding or polishing element 1. Each of rails 7 has connected thereto a band or strip 8 at its side facing the elongated rodor strip-shaped paste 4, the members 8 abutting against the 4adjacent end surfaces .of rollers or runners 9 mounted on an angular carrier 12 for travel along rails 7 between the axial ends of disk l, the directions in which the carrier 12 travels being indicated by double arrow 11. Carrier 12 has a horizontal leg or extension 13a rotatably supporting the lower end of a threaded spindle 14, and may be fixed in a desired position by meansof a retaining element 15, such as a set screw, which is held in support 3 and is adapted t0 bear against the vertical leg 13b of the carrier to releasably connect the latter with support 3. Screw 15 exerts a horizontal clamping force against leg 13b and, when drawn tight,'prevents rollers 9 from traveling along the icflzill 17 and strips or bands 8 in the axial direction of 'germes ferent thicknesses. Housing section 29a is connected with the stationary section 29b by means of spaced spindles 32. The latter are rigidly mounted in section 2911 and extend through suitable apertures in section 29a so as to be outwardly adjacent to a U-shaped guide mem ber 31 which guides a pair of opposed surfaces of paste strip 4 passing between chains 21, 22 toward the periphery 26 of disk 1. Each spindle has a threaded end portion receiving an adjusting nut 34. Resilient elements 33,'here shown las coil springs, surround the spindles 32 and Iact between the housing section 29a and nuts 34. Thus, the four major or side surfaces of a generally rectangular paste stick are engaged and guided by member 31 and by the Stringers 23, 24 of respective chains 21, 22 within the radial passage defined by housing 17.
Referring now to Figs. 3 and 4, means for advancing the driven chains 21 therein shown comprises an electrical lifting magnet or solenoid 35 having a slidable armature 36. The lower end of armature 36 which projects beyond the solenoid 35 carries a pivot pin 37 on which is Y Vfulcrumed an actuating bar 38. The latter carries a pin 39,
Carrier 12 supports a special housing or frame 17 for the paste sticks which is Vadjustable in radial directions of the disk 1. As best shown in Fig. 2, housing or frame 17 is guided by a radial rail 19 which is fixed to carrier 12 and controls a radial rail lfxed to the assembly 17.
Housing 17l supports two pairs of endless chains 21 and 22.l Stringers 23 of chains 21 and Stringers 24 of chains 22 lare adjacent to and parallelwith each other, their distance a being adjustable and so selected that it corresponds to the thickness, i.e. tothe distance between ,theV opposingsurfaces, of a preferably rectangular paste st r1p4. f At least one of chains 21,122 is driven in the direction of arrows 16`bya mechanism to be described in greater detail hereinafter, the other chains merely travel? ing with the driven chains'or chains dueto the engagement of chain links 25 with" the paste'strip i4.' Infthe Aillustrated embodiment, chains 21.V are driven by a solenoid 35 while the chains`22 Vmerelyl follow the movement of chains 21 when a pastestick 4 is introduced between Stringers 23, 24. r v Stringers 23, 24 of respective Vchain pairs 7.1, 22 are prevented from yielding to the relatively solid `paste sticks yby abutting against and by being guided along vertical supporting elements or holding rails 28 which are Vfixed to housing 17 by means of bolts 27.
j. As may be seen in Fig. 2,'the housing 17 comprises two portions or sectionsf29a, 29`b, the section 29a being. movable with respect to the stationary sectioni29b. In this manner, the housing mayaccorumodate paste sticks" ofdifparallel with member 37, which is received in an elongated closed slot 41 provided in-a lever 43 swingable in the directions of arrow 42. Lever 43 is connected with the cage or housing 44 of a rolleror freewheel-clutch 45 which drives the 'shaft46V rigidly mounting the sprockets 47 (see Fig. l) of driven chains 21. When reciprocated, actuating lever 43 causes intermittent angular movements of clutch 45 land thus advances. Stringers 23 of driven chains 21 in the direction of arrows 16. The extent of swinging or oscillatory movement of lever 43 is deter- `mined by an adjusting or setscrew 48 whose end 49 abuts against a lstop plate 51 fixed to the portion 29b of housing17. In this manner, screw 48 also controls the rate at which the paste sticks advance toward the periphery 26 of grinding or polishing diskV 1. ,Plate 51 also support.- the lower end 52 of a tension spring 53 whose other end 54 is connected with pivot pin 37 to constantly urge the lever 43 intosuch extreme position in which the end 49 ofadjustingmember 48 abuts against the stop 5l .and the Y armature 3.6`iswithdrawn from solenoid 35. The oscil- Vlatoryn'iovement in opposing direction is performed by lever,43` under the influenceU of armature 36 .vhen the solenoid 35 mounted on housing section 29b is energized.
The improved paste applying apparatus operates in the following manner: l
A'f5 off'the two directions indicated byfarrow 11 alongfrails'7 of support 3, i;e. in a direction parallel with the axis of shaft 6, whereupon the member is again drawn tight to maintain the assembly 12, 17 in such selected axial position. If necessary, spindle 14 is turned in clockwise or anticlockwise direction to move the housing 17 radially toward (see arrow 16) or away from the periphery 26. Y It will be noted in Fig. 1 that the housing 17 carries a tubular chute or receptacle 55 which contains at least one but preferably more paste sticks 4 in addition to the paste stick 4 already received in the radial passage of housing 17, i.e. withinl guide member 31 and between the stringers 23, 24 of respective chain pairs 21, 2,2. Paste stick 4 is first to, come into actual contact with periphery 26. Upon entry of paste stickp4 between stringers 23, 24, nuts 34 are turned in a direction to compress the coil Vsprings 33 on spindles 31 to the extent suflicient to cause satisfactory engagement of said stringers with the adjacent sides of the stick in that the chain links 25` may actually enter to a certain extent into the material of member 4 and insure jits advance toward the periphery 26 when at least one set of chains, i.e. chains 21, is driven.k
When the electric circuit (not shown) of electromagnet 35 is completed, the latter retractsits armature 36 in upward direction and, over the above-described linkage, causes the lever 43 to turn the clutch 45 in such direction as to cause, over shaft 46 and sprockets 47, av corresponding advance of driven chains 21 in the direction of arrows 16. Such advanceof chains 21 Acauses a corresponding movement of paste stick 4 toward the periphery 26 so that the rotating disk 1 receives a certain amount of paste determined by -the frequency of oscillations performed by lever 43 and by the momentary setting of screw 48 which latter, as above described, controls and determines the rate at which thevpaste stick l4 advances'after eachretraction of armature 36 into the energized solenoid 35. The other pair of chains 22 merely acts as an abutment for the advancing paste stick 4 andperfor'ms intermittent movements similar to those of driven chains 21 without requiring a positive driving connection. It will be understood that the idle or follower chains 22 may be replaced by a solid wall or like guide means along which the paste sticks slide when advanced by the driven chains 21. Y v p When the circuit of solenoid 35 is open resilient member 53 immediately withdraws armature 36 in downward direction until the end 49 of member 48 abuts against the stop plate 51, such movements of armature 36 `,and hence of lever 43 causing no return movements of stringers 23 in the direction' opposed to` that of arrows 16 due tothe well-known characteristics of clutch 45 which latter transmits `rotary motion inone direction only.
Whenthe lowerinost pastestik 4 is partly consumed,V the end-to-'end disposedv stick 4' follows imrnediatelybyv sliding in the enclosure. within tubular member 55 toward and into the passage in housing 1 7; thus, stick 4 is also polishing jdisk lineed` not be interrupted even if the machinepofvwhichl element 1 forms` part is put to extended and `uninterrupted use. -VIt will,b e noted that the length automatic make-and-break system may be utilized when the grinding or polishing machine of which-the disk 1 forms partis put to use for relatively long periods of time. It will be understood that the disk 1 may be replaced by a cylinder or a brush without requiring changes in the construction of the paste applying apparatus. v n
Without further analysis, the v.foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others Vcan by applying current knowledge readily` adapt it for various applications without omitting features that, from the Standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic and specific aspects of this invention and, therefore, such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalence of the following claims.
